My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. I grew up in Cincinnati during the 70's and have very fond memories of him and Marty calling Reds games on the radio. He has left a tremendous legacy and will be sourly missed by all.

For anyone that grew up in Cincinnati, this is as close to losing a member of your family as you can get without actually doing so.

When you consider we had Waite Hoyt for all those years and then Nuxhall we were truly blessed as fans.
For you youngins, Waite was the color man before Joe. During rain delays he would fill the time with stories about baseball in the 20's and 30's when he was a star pitcher for the NY Yankees (of Ruth, Gehrig, etc.)

Keeping the topic on Joe, I will always remember sneaking my pocket radio into bed to listen to Joe call out the rest of the game. His enthusiasm for the Reds was undeniable. He was very much like a dear family member to the whole Cincinnati area and beyond.

I remember Joe Nuxhall for his kindness to those of us (kids) trying to get autographs in the early 1960's.
Some players signed, others didn't. Joe ALWAYS did. He'd ask How's School Going? or How's Your Knothole Team Doing?

A typical Waite Hoyt call might have been...
Bases loaded, 2 outs, Reds trail by 3 in bottom of 9th. Batter hits a deep fly ball to right field.
"And there's a long fly ball, hit deep into right field. Back, back, and, and...the game is over!"
Then you had to wait until after the commercial to find out if it was a Grand Slam or fly out.

You can see parallels with Nuxhall and Ed Jucker. What do I mean? Well with Nuxhall, the Frick award and Hall of fame will likely come after he is gone. With Jucker we named the court for him after he is gone. Wouldn't it have been nice if these things could get done while these guys were still around?

Joe Nuxhall pitched for the Reds from 1952-60 and 1962-66. Guess which year the Reds made the World Series? 1961. I wish he had gotten that chance to pitch in WS game(s).
Both humble men. Both giants at what they did. Both are sorely missed.

This is how we ended up with Pete Rose Way before the gambling happened
