Martin’s college coaching experience consists of a 2000-04 stint as an assistant at Northeastern, 2004-06 as an assistant at Cincinnati and last season at K-State.

“We feel Frank was an integral part of the growth and success of Kansas State basketball this past season,” Athletic Director Tim Weiser said, “and deserves the opportunity to lead this program and continue to build on the foundation that was established.”

K-State had no issue with Martin’s clouded past. He was fired after Miami Senior High was stripped of a state championship because of recruiting violations. His record there was 102-10 and included three straight state championships.

The title from 1997-98 was taken away by the Florida High School Activities Association because of major rules violations that included five players living with a school employee, a coach or a team booster. All three options violate the association’s rules.

Martin later called the firing “unjustified” and said that “not one player was recruited.”

K-State vice president of institutional advancement, Bob Krause, said the university investigated Martin’s firing and saw no reason for it to prevent the school from promoting him.

Martin, known for his fiery temperament on the bench, has faced more difficult obstacles. A life-and-death issue shook his world in May 2006.

Martin was less than a month into his new job on Huggins’ staff when he was stricken with an illness that put him in a hospital and baffled doctors for weeks. It was thought at one juncture that he might have pancreatic cancer. This is often a death sentence — the five-year survival rate is only 4 percent.

Ultimately, Martin was diagnosed with pancreatitis, which is treatable by reducing fried food, fast food and alcohol in his diet.
