Mitch McGary – 6-foot-11, 2012, SYF Players

McGary’s uncanny combination of size, strength, athleticism and coordination is extremely impressive because it allows him to do so much on the court. He loves to rebound the ball and push it up the court himself. He attacks the basket with a nice face-up game, although it’d be nice to see him play more with his back to the basket.

His decision making needs work as he often tries to do far too much before turning the ball over.He also tends to float to the perimeter a bit too much and loves to settle for jump shots despite having the tools to get a much better look at the basket. Overall, McGary was extremely impressive and he is on the verge of blowing up if he hasn’t already. The lefty’s flaws are correctable and easily outweighed by his size and talent.

High major schools are flocking to see him play, as Arizona, UConn, Duke, Florida State, Maryland, Syracuse and Texas are all expected to watch him workout this week. Rivals’ Jerry Meyer notes that McGary might be the “most intrigued” by Arizona, Florida, Maryland and Texas. John Beilein made the trip to watch McGary last week but at this point it’s pretty clear that McGary’s recruitment will explode over the next several weeks and months.

This kid is a huge talent. Has played excellent in the first 2 weeks of the spring.

Sounds like Mick and Buzz Williams were the first to recognize his talent (as these are his 2 current offers). Hopefully being on him early pays some dividends for the Cats. Mick seems to be in on some serious big man talent. Two out of the quartet of Hammons, Macon, McGary, and Poythress would be fantastic for '12.

I keep hearing Macon will reclassify to 2013 and go a year of prep school because of his grades. I really don't think that are that hight on Poythress List. Hammons is very high on UC appartenly are there are some others popping up as well. Long way to go for 2012 recruiting. McGary might be the best of the bunch. It does seem like we should add at least one high major taleneted big man for 2012.

I follow Macon on twitter, and according to his tweets it almost sounds like he's re-committed to west virginia. Last week he was talking about how he was up there on a visit and how he loves that place so much and never wants to leave. I'd be very surprised if we land Macon.

McGary highlights: http://www.umhoops.com/2011/04/18/scouting-video-mitch-mcgary-at-pittsburgh-jam-fest/

Very impressive. More importantly, he really impressed the scouts. Very skilled for a guy who may be 6'11. Runs the court very well. Great shotblocker. Plays a bit out of control, but it is AAU...

That video was very impressive. He has the athleticism and mobility to play in a press.

I didn't come away very impressed with that video. Out of control, maybe 50% ft's, a lot of missed shots under the rim. With that being said, at that big, he can run the floor. That is good. Maybe with good coaching he can improve quite a bit. I assume that's what you hang your hat on, big up side?

We must really be bored since we're talking about a kid that we have very little chance getting, IMO.

He was out of control, yes. How many times is a 6'10 pf going to bring the ball up the court in our system? He's extremely athletic and has a high motor.. He doesn't shy away from contact. He has the ability to face up and attack the rim and showed nice form on his jumpshot. I think that he has huge upside, but he also would be able to come in and play right away.

Do you have inside information? Because I know that Mick and UC have been in on McGary for a long time. He also made a comment a while back about wanting to play in the Big East. Clearly, this doesn't mean he will become a Bearcat. But imo UC will be there until the end.

I hope you're right. But, finishing 2nd is as good as missing by a mile. Realistically, how many of the prospects that we have discussed on here have ever actually signed with UC? It always seems like the ones we sign are completely under the radar, for the most part.

That's how recruiting is in general oldtimer.. Recruit a whole lot of kids but there are only 12 spots on a team. Plus, you're talking about when the program was at a different point than we are now. The coaching staff can sell success to kids versus potential. This staff has a tourney appearance and win under its belt, and they will be one of the top teams in the conference next year. Easier sell than it was a few years ago. I like our chances with McGrary.

In the historical film "Chariots of Fire", British Olympic sprinter Harold Abrahams, after losing a race, told his future wife, Sybill, "If I can't win, I won't run."

She replied, "If you don't run, you can't win."

Same goes for recruiting at the top levels. If a coach wants a big-time program, he has to go after big-time recruits. Of course, they aren't all going to come here, but don't shoot low.

Exactly. I hate the praise for being "in on" some great recruit. There is no grey area in recruiting - committments are the only thing useful to the program. Hopefully some of these upper tier recruits start actually signing with UC.

Here's more video (just over 90 seconds). If you don't understand why this guy is special, then you probably do not need to be posting on the recruiting forums.

Yes, this is edited footage and you don't see the sloppiness brought out in some of his play, but this kid is going to be a great get for whomever he chooses down the road.

If Mitch is still trying to set up a visit to UC, that's a great sign. He might not sign and then at the end of the day it does not matter. But while Mick is still recruiting him, let's not write things off already...

Where did I imply that they should write him off? I'm only saying that until he indicates that he's seriously considering UC, that we shouldn't spend this much time talking about him.

So you don't want others to waste time talking about him, but you want to waste time telling others not to waste time talking about him?

It's not like people are making up a connection between him and UC. If people want to talk about him, let them. If it bothers you, ignore the thread.

Ranked #5 nationally in the new Rivals.com ratings. He's not coming to UC, but still...
