I'm beginning to think this is one big social experiment - "hey, lets put a somewhat believable rumor out there and see how long until it turns into a fact!"
The internets are going to explode.

I'm guessing one of these statements is giving Louisvlle some legs. Imagne the cost for for Track team or Swim team going to WVU.
1. "The New York Times reported Wednesday that U.S. Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, had lobbied Big 12 officials including David Boren, the president of the University of Oklahoma and a former senator, to include Louisville in expansion plans. The Times quoted a person with direct knowledge of the plans as saying: "I think it's 50-50 right now between West Virginia and Louisville."
2. "It's hard to get to West Virginia. Man, I don't know whether these people realize ... because you've got to go to Pittsburgh and then you've got an hour and a half ride to Morgantown," he said.
"I thought it would be Louisville. I thought they would be a better fit for the situation for the Big 12," Tuberville said. "It's just the distance and travel is going to be different for everybody and just being able to get there and for fans to get in and out. "

Let's start a rumor...
"According to Joe-Schmo.news.com, in a totally new concept, UC is expected to announce plans to leave the Big East, and the NCAA altogether, to form a new semi-professional football league."
haha.

McConnell is a LOU alum. Neither Ohio Senators (Brown or Portman) are UC alums. Boehner is an X guy. I think Chabot went to school somewhere out east. Jean Schmidt is the only member of the "Cincinnati" delegation who actually went to the University of Cincinnati, and she's kind of a loony tune (and I say this as a registered R).
Our governor is from Pittsburgh and a University of Columbus grad, which should really tell you everything you need to know about his affiliations sports/university wise.

Point. However, even an X grad must realize having two BCS schools brings a higher profile to the state. And not like X and UC compete for the same student body. I simply don't have $40M+ to spend on education.
UC particularly for being so close to the border has a metro rate for many programs. Any little incentive to get the population in Ohio to grow particularly with higher educated people would be a high priority to ANY congressman.

See my above post. Profile of a state and incentives to move there is a priority.
Look at the growth of the schools in Texas and their economic growth in the last 20 years. I don't think the connection is so tenuous.
Kentucky will pay for kids to move to kentucky and go to school in Cincinnati (UC) simply for the reason that they might stay in the midwest (KY).
This might be a little outside the box for Ohio. But Ohio is also losing population (educated population) at a fast rate.

Not to get off topic, but i seriously doubt the economic growth in texas over the past 20 years is due to TTU and Baylor being in the Big XII.
I totally agree with catscratch.... the politicians should stay out of this fight. It will only end up worse if they all start to get invovled.

It's absolutely in Ohio's best interest to have two BCS level universities in the state bringing media dollars and tourism dollars into Ohio.
However, for a non-alum, this probably ranks in the bottom quartile on the ol' Priority-o-Meter compared to things like, say, nationwide jobs creation (national gov't) and passing various cost-saving issues (SB5 at State level).
It also doesn't help that a majority of the players in this game (Boehner, Portman, and Kasich) all have designs on offices higher than the one they currently occupy and don't feel the need to play hometown hero for UC.

With all due respect, there's no way Boehner thinks he's ever going to be anything more than Speaker.

You'll find a divorce from reality is usually per-requisite to achieving anything in national politics.

It's not just media and tourism dollars we are talking about here. And it's definitely not just supporting the old alma mater. The Senators in Kentucky and West Virginia get it. These are State supported schools.
Every dollar a School brings in from their Conference affiliation is a dollar the State can spend on something else.

810 radio in KC reported from a tweet from a reporter that Texas wants WVU but OK wants Louisville and that is what is causing the hold up.
It's a little like my sister's best friend's, brother saw Ferris Bueler pass out at 31 flavors last night. But probably no worse than the other rumors.

Don't butcher an awesome quote: "My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious." Thank you, Simone.

You got the point. No way I was typing all that on my phone. It is a great quote though and sadly perfect for this mess.

IMDB keeps quotes, copy. paste.
"I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate."
And apparently that makes Louisville and UC "absolutely nothing! Which is what (UC is) about to become."

I live in KC. The guy who reported that...Kevin Kietzmann...is notorious around these parts for making **** up. He's a hack.

Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) is now involved in this debate as well. You can enforce the rules how you see fit, but I don't see how you can discuss the issue of realignment and not acknowledge that there's a political reality happening as well.

This whole "realignment" (i.e. cash grab) involving the Big12 and BE will also highlight just how one dimensional the state of Ohio is when it comes to their universities. Notice that we read and hear how high level politicians (even governors) in other states are involved. And where are the folks from the Ohio state legislature when UC needs them? Once again we see that if you're a school not named OSU in Ohio, you're not on their radar. I have said it before and it bears repeating now; no other state the size of Ohio has only 1 school that dominates the political & financial agenda the way OSU does in Ohio. There ought to be an investigation, but it will never happen.

Maybe it's time for the Ohio legislators to stay quiet and let Pres. Williams go to the Big 12 and suggest that with all the political uproar over UofL and W. Va, why not just invite UC and side step the whole issue. ;)

I would be suprised if these discussions hadn't already happened.

Drastic times means drastic measures...I think it's time to have a nice little conversation with ND...which this is what the dismantling of the BE is all about. Force ND's hand.

It could work. Everyone save the PAC12 is keeping a seat warm for them - they will not choose the Big East. BUT if you play hardball and kick them out everything changes. I would wager they go B1G, who would then maybe add Rutgers for 14. I guess you hope BYU/Boise end up PAC14, and Big12 goes 14 with UL, WVU, and UC. If the ACC is kind they go to 16 with UConn & USF.
Too many variables, but its fun to war game the whole thing.

This should have been done a year ago. It's too late to try to force ND's hand. It would require a vote of the schools. There is no way the FB schools would get enought votes to boot them if they turned down FB in the Big East. (UC, UConn, Rutgers, USF, L'ville and WVU (if the latter to would even participate))
All the basketball schools like ND in the conference. We're a day late and a dollar (well, more like a billion dollars) short.

If the ship is already sinking... and it clearly is, why not throw up this hail mary and see what happens? I agree that we are a day late and dollar short on this...but either way ND is out of the conference as I don't see them playing in a cobbled together version of C-USA.
