I went to the Withrow vs. Woodward game last night and wanted to share some impressions on Gates. First of all, he is all of 6'10". I mentor a kid who plays for Woodward. I took my mentee to the doctor, and he is 6'9" in his socks. Gates was a full inch taler than him.

THE BAD:
Yancy is bigger and stronger than everyone on the high school level. He doesn't play very hard. He could dominate every possession if he played with consistant desire. He yells at his team mates, and gets frustrated when he is played physically. He takes bad shots (he shot an airball three), and missed the only two free throws that he took. His team won a game by six that they should have won by 30.

In his defense, neither team had a point guard and the game was very chaotic with no flow. He was constently triple-teamed, and his teammates rarely looked for him. The officials let Woodward hack him.

THE GOOD:
This kid is an absolute "man-child". UC has never had an athlete like this. The pre-game lay-up line started before the officials arrived. It looked like a dunk contest with Gates the winner. His grace and athleticism were jaw dropping. He looked like a 6' 10" Vince Carter...taking off well outside of the lane, taking the ball between his leggs an finishing with a windwill dunk (eyes rim level).

As I think about former Bearcats to compare him to, he is like a bigger Kenyon, or a taller, more muscular, more athletic Art long. His basketball skills far exceed either of those players upon their arrival to Clifton. He handles the ball exceptionally well. Shoots it with either hand. Has a feathery touch from 15 feet. Very quick first step and finshes like Mike Tyson in his prime.

He has an NBA body and athleticism right now. This kid is chisled.

CONCLUSION:
There is no chance that this kid will be at UC for four years. He is a future millionaire if ever I saw one. Mick and the BIG East will bring out the best in him sooner than later. If there are 10 player in the country better than Gates, please tell me where I can watch them play.

What was Gates' stat line from last night? Haven't seen him since the game against LaSalle last year and your post seemed to fit what I saw last year, although I don't ever remember him yelling at his teammates in the LaSalle game.

He is a man child, and very quick for his muscular build. I saw him play against Moeller, LaSalle and Elder last year and look forward to seeing him play against Moeller again this year @Withrow.

Danny McElroy the Junior at LaSalle who committed to UC had a big game last night against McNick, somewhere along the lines of 20/10.

Thank you for sharing these impressions, which confirm what I've been told about his size and abilities. The downside is whether he'll stick around very long.

McElroy is a horrible basketball player. He is 6'6 for sure...and incredibly weak. I went to the mcnick game. Mcnick did not have anyone over 6'3 on their roster. While McElroy had 18 points, and Lasalle trounced the Rockets because of great 3 point shooting (9-17), he was horrible inside. All of his baskets were cheapies. He had a couple nice spin moves to the baseline for layups but he missed 4 or 5 within 5 feet of the hoop. He is a nice high school player, but he better hope the NCAA changes its red shirt rule to 3 years, because he wont be ready for Big East basketball for another 7 or 8. I have never been more unimpressed with a D1 recruit (especially Big East) in my life. He should have ate Mcnick up, but instead they relied on their shooting.

LaSalle has always been run and gun under Coach Fleming. Hard to get a lot of chances when you don't handle the ball well. He still is ranked in the Top 150 of his class and I heard good things about him coming out of the summer camps this year.

I think he starts from Day 1 at UC.

Over Mike Williams? Or along side of him?

I agree wiht BigCat I saw those two go at it and Danny was considerably weaker but he played physical. He was only a sophomore and I expect that he is even better. I will wait to he plays Moeller to go see him though.

have u guys heard of quinten rollins from wilmington. i was at the turpin wilmington game last night and this kid is the real deal. he had 27 points and at least 10 assists and HE IS ONLY A SOPHMORE. at 5 foot 11 this kid might be one of the best point guards i have ever seen and mick should snatch him up right now. he took over the game in teh 4th quarter and created shots for himself and hsi teammates.

I dont believe I have ever had higher expectations for a UC recruit than what I have for Yancy... I am really excited.

Over Mike Williams? Or along side of him?

I'd guess side-by-side. But he (Gates) is good enough to start, right away.

It takes quite a guy to anonymously rip a HS Jr.

I only rip him because after his one dunk that he had, He put both of his arms up flexing and ran down the court. I was unsure of why he is so cocky, hes horrible. Cant wait for the Big East to put him in his place....if he ever gets off the bench.

And how many of his games have you been to? I'll trust Mick's opinion over yours.

He is a man child freak, I dont care if he does kart wheels down the court after getting a rebound, that wont happen here. He is a BEAST!

I'm kind of hoping that he makes you eat your words, just like Cronin will in your judgement of him.

You know, I've seen Kmart, Hicks, and Brannen all do virtually the same thing at one time or another while playing for UC. I don't care for it, and prefer the way Maxiell conducts himself, but those guys were Bearcats (as will be McElroy) and I supported them. Why on earth would you wish for any Bearcat to be a waste of a roster spot?

Exactly!!! If you really feel this way, why on earth would you waste your time posting on a Bearcat FAN forum?!?!?
