I know we have covered just about every angle of the current situation, but watching Mick on the Coach's show this AM, he put it in pretty easy to unterstand terms.
"We are the ONLY TEAM IN AMERICA that does not have a 3rd year scholarship player"
WOW, not a single player with more than 1.5 years of D-I experience. Go Cats, Beat 'Cuse!

Thats a good excuse also. But the bottom line is he has to get more out of the freshman. They are the ones that will be here next year. Here's the box score on the 6 freshman combined in yesterdays game.
total min - 62, FG made -2, fg att - 8, Ft made - 0, Ft att - 0, assist - 1, fouls - 5, reb - 4, total pts -4.
I don't know how he will do it, but he has to get more production out of the freshman.

We covered this before, it is what it is, why does he have to keep making excuses.
I don't think UC lost to St John's because we didn't have a 3rd year scholarship.
Whenever I start really getting ready to get behind Mick he has to point our some excuse.
He could have had a 3rd year scholarship player if he would have let Devan back.
I don't get why a good coach like him has to make these kind of excuses.
We have 3 year type talent in Williamson, isn't this his 3rd year of College ball? Cin Stat, then last year and this year at UC? So not only is it an excuse, it's not really even accurate.

Its D-II JUCO. Yeah. That should count as equivalent to D-1 experience.

no one said anything about Div 1
the point is, he makes this excuse for the loss and the players suddenly have an excuse to lose the rest. "Hmmm coach says we don't even have a 3rd year scholarship player... guess that's why we're losing, it has nothing to do with the fact I can't hit a layup or dunk, or follow his coaching..."
excuses are for losers, and that's not meant as an attack, it's just is what it is.
PLEASE MICK, talk about how you're going to improve, and the things that you CAN change to make the team better THIS year, you cannot change how many 3 year scholarship players we have on this years team so get over it and doin't bring it up anymore, there is nothing you can do to change it, or should we just expect to lose the rest based on this excuse.
I REALLY wish he would stop with these excuses.
Somehow the team with NO 3rd year scholarship players beat the predicted winner of our league, they certainly could have beaten St Johns. The excuse was weak.
Just coach who you have and keep working hard, please leave the stuff you can't control out of it. I once heard a wise coach say "It is what it is" and another one say "I can only coach the players that are here" those are opinions and statments I can respect.
This excuse is counterproductive and indicitive of Cronin's inexperience. he will learn.
It's this type of attitude and style that hurts my respect for him as a coach. It get's old.

Did you watch the coach's show? My guess is you didn't. He wasn't making an excuse when he said that. You can't just look at a quote and say someone is making an excuse, you have to put it in the context of the conversation.

Coaches (not just Cronin) say things to the media and the public that are different than what is said to their team at practices and meetings. He is not making excuses; he is 'managing' the expectaiuons of the fans.
Keep the faith!!! Cronin is the man for this situation.
Somehow the team with NO 3rd year scholarship players beat the predicted winner of our league, they certainly could have beaten St Johns. The excuse was weak.
So it's fair to use a huge upset orchestrated by Cronin against him when he makes a comment you don't particularly like? Interesting.

Its actually John's 4th year of college ball but only 2nd year of D-1, which is specifically referenced after Mick's quote. He wasn't making an excuse, just a point.

My understanding was that Devan didn't want to be a Bearcat any longer because of not hiring AK. He decided to transfer with Mick recruiting him to stay. Did Devan have a change of heart of which I am not aware? Can anyone give more info on Devan?

I know that there is an existing thread on the "Where are they now" forum that goes into great detail about Devan Downey. Please use that thread to find out more or to discuss Devan further.

There is a difference between an excuse and reality.
Some refuse to understand the reality of the situation.

Roster reality is 5 seniors, having gone through 2 seasons of pre-season practice, and completed almost 1 1/2 seasons of games. They shouldn't lose to the patsies in the OOC schedule this year.
The last 5 games, St Johns not counted - they have played much better as a team. Looks like Warren has made the difference in this run. With Warren saddled with ficticious fouls - they look bad.
The roster depth at guard is what is killing them it looks like. We lose Warren but gain a freshman PG. We need at least one more PG in the system. I wouldn't mind another JUCO or Prep school PG signed for next year.

I think this is an excellent point. In a few of UC's recent losses, they've shut down a opposing player only to have someone else on that team step up and make shots. That's the depth that UC lacks.
If everything goes right for UC, they're an excellent team (i.e. Louisville game). However, if Warren is in foul trouble, or Vaughn's shot is off, or the opponent is making 3 pointers, UC is in trouble. UC doesn't have the luxury of a top player having an off night. I think when the freshmen start to step their games up the team will have more options, both in who plays and in which matchups Coach Cronin can exploit.
I also think we're already starting to see some of that, which is why they've looked much better the past few games. The team has shown the ability to quickly switch defensive styles, with good success. They also are running a capable offense. (They may be missing lots of open shots and layups, but at least the scheme is creating those opportunities) The St. John's game was definitely a step back, but that happens with an inexperienced team (and make no mistake - this is an extremely inexperienced team).

I agree that Mick is starting in the direction of forcing Vaughn to carry the team when he should be looking for other scoring options.
I do like that he played pretty much everyone against St. John's. The young uns just didn't rise to the occasion.

Whether or not he said this quote as an excuse or not he has made alot of excuses.. at the beginning of the year it was not having mike or warren..then it was the inexperience.. everyone understands the situation uc is in and we dont expect uc dominating teams..he would make excuses for why we would lose to teams like bowling green.. usually its due to a lack of players.. makes me wonder what he will say when uc is a power house again.. i dont know what he said but his excuse for losing to st john's should be that the offense was horrible.. i wish he didnt keep beating the bush on why we are not a good team due to the players we do or do not have.. i along with alot of people dont expect him to win right now but i wish he had the mind set that he is going to beat anyone he faces maybe he will get more emotional..not saying his standards are low but it seems that mick is ok with losing right now.. yes this team is going to lose but if mick expected more then this team was capable of maybe they will play outside theirselves!

Again, a lot of these quotes are not excuses. He specifically said that defense hurt them in the St. John's game. Is that an excuse?
Example, if on the coach's show, Mick is asked how the lost of Williams has effected the team, Mick might answer it saying something to the effect of "well it hurt because we expected him here and he was one of our best players". Then you see this in the paper, is this an excuse or was he just answering the question?

1 - Mick expects more from his team than what he says on TV
2 - He is more intense during practice than he is in interviews
3 - When he's on TV he's talking to fans, not his team
4 - He did say the team didn't play as well as the more recent games
5 - You can't rip a young, struggling team publically - they need support when they are not getting the wins. If all they get is negative comments and no coaching or positive motivation, the team would totally disconnect.
Mick is doing an OUTSTANDING job!!!
