Interesting article in the Freakonomics column of the NYT regarding the effect of College Football on violence:

I've always been amazed (or should that be alarmed) by fan "riots" after team victories. Cuts across all sports. It's usually low-scale vandalism, but still...
I guess that's why they are called Fans (fanatics).
