Man, I am so pumped that it will be hard to sleep tonight I think. If we get McClain now, watch out.

“Yancy chose Cincinnati over Indiana and Georgetown,” Duncan said. “He is a great commitment for UC, and will be huge in Mick Cronin bringing the program back up to the prominence that Bob Huggins had it at in years past.”

"It is going to be downright scary how good Yancy can become, if he buys into Coach Cronin’s system at UC and utilizes his immense physical abilities more effectively in college."

"Gates has the ability to beat more traditional power forwards off of the dribble from the outside with his remarkable quickness for a player with such freakish strength. He can keep defenders honest with his ability to hit the three, but can also kill you inside of the paint with his ability to jump through the roof and his feathery soft touch. The skill set that he possesses is not matched by many in his class, and his physical attributes can be matched by only a select few."

"Draft fans should surely keep an eye on Gates, as he has all of the physical traits that NBA teams are looking for in a power forward, to go along with the raw skills on the perimeter that truly make him a special player potentially. If Yancy is able to play consistently once he hit’s the Big East and continues to develop at merely an average rate, it will be awfully surprising not to see him in NBA jersey by the time it is all said and done."

...WOW! Brick by brick baby! Mick and his team is re-building the program. McClain is next, mark my words. When has UC ever beaten out traditional power houses for this type of talent? Nobody wanted Leonard Stokes, Steve Logan, Kenyon, Mel Levett, Maxelle, etc...we got lucky with Damon Flint after he had already signed with Ohio State, and Wingfield and Fortson had too much baggage for the big boys (Duke, UK, IU, etc.) - same with Damarr Johnson (attitude risk + one and done).

In the last twenty years, Satterfield was the only recruit that EVERYBODY wanted who signed the Bearcats. Guess who recruited him??? MICK!!!

To be fair though, being in the Big East conference compared to C-USA certainly helps with recruiting. Yancy's coach/guardian made mention of that factor in his comments. Having said that it does appear that Mick is a tireless worker and does a great job with building the relationships with recruiting.

Lets not go crazy, Huggs turned the majority of those players into NBA talent but I'm very excited about the recruits coming into the program. Hopefully the winning will begin again.

It's not fair to say nobody wanted those guys. I think we beat out some good teams to get those guys besides maybe Logan. In all honesty we got really lucky to get Logan just like Tenn got really luck to get Chris Lofton. I was just happy to have a PG who could score and hit free throws. Never thought he would be an ALL-American!

Huggs did a great job with recruiting. You guys know I am not a Hugg's fan but he still did a good job. UC's campus back then did not have the attraction of the Varsity Village. I think a new basketball building would do worlds for Mick's recruiting as well.

Anyway, C-USA really hurt but that hasn't seemed to stop Memphis, so I won't let you use C-USA as an excuse for Huggs. I think in the end Huggs image was starting to become a problem for recruiting. If you were a good, clean player why would you want to play for Huggs? Too many options. I know he put people in the NBA but in the end he had to get the risky players and that tended to lead to many other problems. Even the guys in the NBA haven't helped his image problem. Kenyon and Forston have not been positive role models. Even Hicks in Europe seems to be having issues with his team. I do think JMax will be a good role model though. I sure hope he gets more of a chance soon.

...It's not fair to say NOBODY wanted those guys. But UC was not beating out top-10 programs for them. You can add Ruben Patterson to the list of ex UCers who are NBA headaches.

But it also not true. But I suppose you can define your own sense of fairness.

Can anybody remember Dontonio Wingfield? Although he never lived up to the hype ....as a senior in high school he was by most accounts a top-5 player in the country that had everybody looking at him.

Never the less, this is a huge signing on more than just the talent level ....we got the #1 local talent to stay here - a huge positive sign for the program if there ever was one. When's the last time we did that?!

Wingfield was far and away the most talented player Huggins ever signed. He was unreal as a frosh...but his attitude never let him to amount to anything and he left after one year. Very sad really. Had he stayed under HUggs for three years i really think he could have been great.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Johnson was expected to go pro so not many were after him. Too bad they both left so early.

Honestly I don't care if we don't get the #1 local player every year. Some years that player might not be one of the best we can get. However, the two local guys we got that are top 100 are worth getting and that does not include Henry. It is good to know that if they have the talent that Mick can go get them. I wish we could get the St Eds kid Doe (sp?). Amazing how much talent is in Ohio right now.

Man the local teams have really been picking up some talent. Ohio State continues to get great players, Xavier has picked up a couple of top 100 players and UC seems to be getting some great players. Very impressive. We should have some great Cross-town shoot out games in the future. I wonder if Ohio State will continue to play us?

Your thinking of Delvin Roe from Lakewood St. Edwards, I saw him play verse Moeller in the final four and he was not that great. Taking into account Moeller does a great job verse star players, I would much rather of Yancy Gates. Yancy can do things physically that nobody in the country can do. That impressive.

UC beat out UK for Maxiell. Eric Hicks went on an official recruiting visit to UConn. Dermarr was rated the top player in his class by some publications and had just about every top program after him.

And Ruben Patterson is only a headache to the NBA SGs and SFs he defends each game.

Levydl - DOn't forget about Winfield.

The main thing for me with local players is regenerating local interest and it does give you a little confidence that a kid who knows the school so well chose to stay here.

As a new UCATS member at the age of 25 and a season ticket holder for the first time, I can't wait to watch Yancy Gates. He fills that void that Bill Walker left behind when he followed huggs to K-State. If you havent seen this guy play, he may be more athletic than Bill Walker.
