JUCO BIG MAN HAS BIG EAST INTEREST

Currently Miami-Dade College is in the midst of a solid season, with a record of 14-5 overall and a 5-1 record in the Southern Conference of the FCCAA, good for a first place tie with Indian River. So far this season, Indian River and Miami-Dade have split their two meetings and their February 18th showdown is likely to decide the conference title.

Head coach Matt Eisele has put together a very talented roster with nine freshman and two sophomores. One of those sophomores is drawing quite a bit of college interest from recruiters as the spring signing period approaches.

“Steven Toyloy is being recruited by every conference in the country,” coach Eisele told the NBE Basketball Report. “His Top 6 as we speak are Kentucky, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Purdue, Baylor and Clemson, in no order,” the coach continued.

Toyloy is a 6’8, 255 lb power forward from West Palm Beach (FL) who is averaging about 11 points and 12 rebounds a game while shooting 62% from the field for Miami-Dade on the season.

“There have been multiple Big East Schools call on Steven or come watch him play, including UCONN, Seton Hall, St. John’s, West Virginia and Cincinnati”, coach Eisele said.

That would be a nice pick up for added low post depth. Nice wide body, and it will only take up two years and will help balance the classes. Hopefully he can shoot free throws. Belton did "look" much better against St. Johns though.

At the games it is amazing how many people hold their breath when Belton shoots a free throw!

What amazed me was how his first one early in the game was super-ugly and then how the two he shot at the end of the game were nothing but net beauty. What an enigma.

Do we need another 6'8" PF?

He's listed 6-9 or 6-10 elsewhere. He's a solid post player no matter his exact height.

I agree, if the kid can play in the low post and play it well, then height should not matter. I have complete confidence that Mick will find another solid low post player for this year's class.

Remember, with guys like Williams, Gates, Belton and McClain along with (to some extent) Aldridge on next year's team, we don't need the next Shaq here. Although, if he is released, I wouldn't mind seeing the first Bobo on campus next year...

I will say one thing I liked better about the Huggins era than the Cronin era so far is that it seemed as though we knew much more about who Huggs was targeting in recruiting. Cronin seems to play his cards tight to the vest when it comes to recruiting. I have noticed far less updating on the recruiting page by Mike than when Huggs was here.

Recruiting is probably my favorite aspect of the college game. I love reading and hearing about who we are recruiting for the future probably a little more so than the actual games and players on the team now.

I love recruiting info too. But I think some of Mick's success is going to come from keeping things under the vest. :D

There is absolutely no advantage to UC for Cronin to reveal who he is or is not recruiting. In fact, coaches are not allowed to comment on recruits until the player signs a LOI. I'll defer to Cronin's judgment based on his years of experience recruiting D1 men's basketball players that playing it close to the vest is the best practice.

I'm not in anyway criticising the way Cronin handles recruiting. I understand that there is no advantage gained by making it known who he is recruiting. I was simply commenting that I enjoy the recruiting aspect of college basketball and would like to be more informed as to who we are recruiting. I don't expect Mick to changes his ways to please me or anyone else who enjoys recruiting. Just making a statement not a criticism, sorry if it came off differently.

I think there is an advantage, but I don't think it is significant enough for Mick to change is ways. By reveling who he is recruiting he causes more interaction with the fan base. He does still need to build a relationship with a lot of the middle tier fans.

Next year is the one time we don't need a JUCO big man. We have Belton, Williams, Aldridge, Biggie, and Gates all fighting for time next year.....so how much do you think he would play anyway? Better to find a good big guy who won't mind sitting next year, learning the ropes, building strength, etc.

Biggie ain't going anywhere. If he doesn't stay at UC until after his junior year, he is foolish. Granted he's been injured, but he hasn't shown much, except that he's tall.

I agree...hes not anywhere near as strong as he needs to be to go pro. And again, the kid hasnt done all that much this year. I think **** need at least 2 more years in college to even think about leavin for the nba.

Of those 5 players only one is a C and he hasn't shown me that he will be able to log 28 minutes a game next year.

I'm sure we can get away with playing 2 PFs, but when we get to conference time, it will hurt us.

My guess the HS centers are gone and JUCO is plan B at this point.

Another 6'10" center with experience would be a nice addition. 5 minutes a game and a good competitor in practice would be worth the 2 years.

Go Cats!

I see your point, but I guess we disagree.

BTW-If Williams doesn't get a 2nd year after next year, I'd like to see him get some court time this year.

I'm about 100% sure Williams will not play this year due to the fact that my friend is rehabing Williams and Mike is still unable to run for long periods of time. Mike's rehab consists of running on a treadmill that is under water, because the boincy of doing this is less detrimental on his repaired achilles.

As an athletic training student, I know that a ruptured achilles tendon is a very hard injury to rehab. Mike's work ethic is outstanding but there's no way he will return this year, unless Mick takes a big risk.

That's too bad. UC needs to catch a break once in awhile.

I'd love to see him play as much as anyone but it would be silly to take the risk now. Might as well wait til next year and pray for the year after that.
