I guess we can finally agree this kid is an absolute workhorse.

I attended last nights game. Here is what I wrote on YG's profile.
At the beginning of the second half, Gates was called for a foul that he disagreed with - and he was mad. Over the next four minutes he had 11 pts, two rebs and two blocks as he played with power and confidence, even while facing double teams. He was unstoppable for this period of time. Gates sometimes is called 'lazy', but this four minute stretch is what Cronin should be able to get out of him regularly this fall. Next game - Sat Mar 1st at UD Arena at 8pm.

Question, Mike:
Why do you always list the recruits' height an inch or two shorter than they really are?

To make up for the inch or two that coaches/other websites add on

I always list the conservative number. High schools and colleges are well known for inflating their players' heights. So when I see two or three conflicting heights listed for a player on different sources, I always chose the shortest one.
Since I assume you are speaking of Yancy, I do feel comfortable changing his height to 6-9 now. Many have said he has grown in the last year and I would have listed him at 6-8 a while back. Changing it now.

I remember Yancy saying about 2 years ago he was 6'7". Good to see he is still growing.

He may grow for another year or two, he's just a baby! Hard to imagine he is not rated higher based on potential. I hope Mick can inspire him (if not he will not get much playing time).

I'm tired of hearing about Gates and his lack of numbers, or his supposed laziness. If he plays lazy at times, so what. It's hard for any player/team to get geared up to play when you dominate them. Good players want to be challenged...that's why so many teams (not the best ones usually) play down to their opponent.
The question to me is....do we want or need him at UC. Obviously, it's a huge yes. That said, I trust Mick to have the ability to get what he wants out of his players. His current team has come a long way since early in the season. Everyone is on board but Mitchell, and if Gates or anyone has visions of not giving a full effort....you'll see a repetition of Mitchell.
Bottom line.....I have no worries about Gates.

"It's hard for any player/team to get geared up to play when you dominate them. Good players want to be challenged"
Then why did he drop from a top 20 player on rivals to a top 85 player after his summer AAU performance, when he was playing against the best competition? I don't put much stock in rankings, but dropping a guy 65 spots or so is a statement by the rankings service.
Also, you said

That is a team reference. Not an individual player. Withrow did not prove anything last year in the tournament, nor have they this year, besides beating a few teams they should beat easily. QUIT MAKING EXCUSES FOR GATES.
Everyone here knows hes lazy. Accept that. We all hope it changes next year, but right now, he's lazy. 33 pts vs. Talawanda- great. they are mediocre competition at best. He should put up 33 with ease against a school like that who's starting 5 does not have the combined atletic ability and size that he has in half of his body. A player of his athleticism and size should putting up 33 a night, not one game vs a weak opponent.

Exactly...
I'm not worried about him next year tho, if hes lazy he wont play. He will get the message very fast. Right now he can be lazy, because he knows hes still going to play regardless, this wont be the case next year.
Help me get my depth chart straight. Will Mick start Williams and Gates as the two post players? Mick subs Belton for Adam/McClain this year and Gates is bigger than Belton. I just hope that next year's post players-that-I haven't-seen are better than the ones-that-I-have-seen. I guess Mick may play Aldridge at SF if he can score from outside. Maybe?

Good post......
I see things as:
Wright
Vaughn
Bishop
Williams
Biggie
Although it could change shortly to:
Wright
Vaughn
Aldridge
Williams
Gates
Who knows.

Cincinnati area teams like Mt. Healthy, Harrison, Northwest, Norwood, Colerain & Sycamore don't think Talawanda is that weak - they all got whipped in the last few weeks.

first off- that doesn't address the point that he should be putting up 33 a night and that none of those teams starting 5's come close to his athleticism.
Also "Mt. Healthy, Harrison, Northwest, Norwood, Colerain & Sycamore" are all mediocre competition as well. You have to think of it how the talent of the opponents compare to Gates. there is no comparison.
