We are down by 3 with about 40.0 seconds left on the clock and we elected to foul once the ball was inbounded. Why not try to get the ball back and call a time out? I was saying outloud we would play it out but Mick proved me wrong... What do you think???

Not enough time to play it out. If they run the shot clock down and somehow we hold them to a miss without a foul, we have to drill a 3 with very little time. I rather put them on the line, stop the clock and let them earn two from the line with about 30 sec left.

I like the choice that Mick made. It ended up being pretty smart. Fields made one out of two and UC was down four with 40 seconds left and the ball. The situation was pretty good. If we don't foul and then they make a bucket we're definitely out of it. If we foul and get the ball back with 40 seconds left then we can at least control how the game finishes. As the poster above me said, there really wasn't enough time. If this were the pros then they'd play it out, but with a 35 second clock you almost have to foul. They would have run the play clock under 5 and then UC would be left with 10 seconds or less with at best a three point deficit.

let it go...this team can't beat anyone in the BE. They greatly overacheived in mid-season. They are done...the good news is that I believe the future to be bright. Strategy doesnt matter when you score like a football team.

I am with you CSF...in that situation you shouldnt foul until they prove they can get the ball over half court in under 10 secs...of course that maybe why I am in business vs. coaching

It seemed like Mick didn't want a foul there, but Davis made a freshman mistake. Or am I thinking of another time?

If this team can't beat anyone in the Big East, then in what conference do Louisville, Syracuse, Villanova, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Rutgers, St. John's and South Florida play? I thought those eight teams were in the Big East and the 'Cats beat them all. Maybe I missed their departure from the Big East?
This team finished ahead of where it was predicted to finish, and those predicitons were made when Mike Williams was available to the team. Am I satisfied with the season? No, I am not. Did the team exceed my pre-season outlook/expectations? Absloutely. This team overachieved this season, in my opinion, and I am proud of that fact.

Even if you let them shoot at the end of the shot clock, there is no guarantee we get the rebound. Pitt killed us on the offensive glass the second half. It was ridiculous. we need rebounders BAD!! Give me a Blair-type wide body...one like, say, Yancy Gates

All those teams that UC beat had a much higher ceiling than UC did. UC reached their ceiling early and beat them when they were still finding themselves. As the season progressed, those teams continued on upward toward their ceilings while UC stayed at theirs which was much lower.

In college where you get the ball at the spot you can't do this. If they shoot with 2 seconds left on the shot clock you get the ball with 3 or 4 seconds left if everything goes right. That is if they miss the shot, the rebound isn't long and the rebound is clean and they don't make the shot to begin with.
I won't pretend that our defensive rebounding was a strength yesterday and the way Pitt had been shooting FTs I really like the call.

As the season progressed, those teams continued on upward toward their ceilings while UC stayed at theirs which was much lower.I think that's a fair assessment. The reason we didn't continue to improve is because we just didn't have the athletes. The seniors, who dominated the playing time, were not BEAST worthy; and none of the freshmen were immediate impact type players.

Whether or not the teams we played in the middle of the year were finding themselves IDK, but you didnt play to theri ceiling after mid season..we lost to lesser teams down the stretch at home and didnt play our best..we played poor down the stretch it has nothing to do with UC not being good enough..after the miami game when this team starting playing up to potential they became a middle of the pack team in this league!

That was then, this is now...6 losses in a row. They'd be hard pressed the beat South Florida on a nuetral court!

who ever said about Gates being a solution to the rebounding problem hasn't seen him play. he doesn't box out or try to board at all.

That's where coaching comes into play. He'll get a lot more attention on that in college.

Thanks for the input.. I think you hit the nail on the head. I totally had a lapse and forgot about the ball at the spot in college. It's just a shame either way didnt work out for the better.

dude he is 6-9 260......like IrishBearcat said, thats why coaches make the money they make.....it cracks me up people think gates is going to come to College Basketball and not hustle or run past half court....common sense isnt so common around here......
to be that high a recruit with his stock still rising, he will rebound, he will boxout....i dont think its a question if he will or not, if not he wont play and do you really see that happening?
