Per Bill Koch's blog - Kilpatrick gave commitment today. Not good w/linking sites but to read more check out his blog on cincinnati.com.

To me this indicates either Williams is not coming back or someone will be leaving between now and next year.

Thanks for the links, looks to be a solid pickup, Telep commented that he was playing his basketball at the end of his high school career and a lot of people got in on him late. He aparently wasn't focused on school, thus the need to go to prep school.

It's definitely insurance, but we Bearcat fans know the only thing constant is change.
Based on his position and size, he's wing insurance in the event Mitchell, Davis, or Dixon transfers/is asked to leave.
Of course any of the frontcourt players could choose to transfer or in Williams case not be able to return, or Riek could not qualify, or any number of things could happen.
At this point, we're not at "ask someone to transfer to JUCO then to Oklahoma" territory yet. It never hurts to have insurance. Of course with the numbers as they stand, this indicates an overflow of players. But something will change.

How many wing players do we need? Bishop, Mitchell, Wilks........Kilpatrick?
We have no scholarships available for '09. Weird. I know things are always subject to change, but I don't exactly see any unhappy players, nor is there anyone I consider a bad apple that I'd like to see transfer.
Maybe Mick expects some disgruntled players after this upcoming season, when they don't see much playing time.

Sure would be nice to get to that point again wouldn't it.

What about Biggie leaving? I know he was hurt last year, but he has a looooong way to go to see productive minutes.

That would make sense but I dont think Mick is ready to make that move. A 7 footer who can run and shows potential you need to hold on too. However I dont see him being productive at all this year and if he transferred it wouldnt hurt us too badly. He wouldnt be my first choice but I could see it.
We are not sure about Riek and if he will be cleared, and Mike Williams is not garenteed to be back so we may not need someone to transfer.
After a breakthrough year.

Should be a good pickup. Not sure how anyone can doubt why we need him as a wing. When he's a freshmen all the other wings will be juniors, so he won't be needed much his freshmen year. I'm sure when Mick coached with Huggins he learned its better to have freshmen sit and learn from veterans than to throw them in the mix early.

How could that possibly make sense? And how can you possibly say he won't be productive at all this year? If you want to make that comment after a month of the basketball season with facts to back it up, fine. But to say that someone is not going to be productive at this stage of the season is not very intelligent. We do not know what type of offense Mick is going to run. We don't know who, other than Vaughn, is going to be an offensive focus for the Cats. We don't know how the minutes are going to shake out either. Mick may consider Biggie productive if he averages 6 points and 10 rebounds with a couple blocks. Who knows. Let's wait to see what offense Mick uses before labeling people as busts or not productive.
People have been complaining for years about UC being unable to get size down low. We all loved guys like Hicks, but just think what Hicks could have done with a 7 footer around. Now UC starts getting some size and consistent commitments from good players who are 6'9" and taller and now we want them to transfer out because they didn't put up Greg Oden numbers as a freshman? Come on, get serious! And it would very much hurt the depth of this front line if he left. Mike Williams and Yancy are PF along with Belton (who has a back issue) and your only Centers would be Biggie and Toyloy right now. Riek would obviously fit there if healthy and if he qualifies. In the Big East, you need more than one center who can play to be able to survive the season.
And finally, why are people worried about who is going to be here next year? This year hasn't even started yet. I like seeing these commitments even when there are no scholarships "available" because we all know things can happen. Plus, wouldn't there be a scholarship available if Mike Williams is not back after this year? I think the UC Basketball program has assumed already that he is done after this year. Even Dan Hoard has said that his case is going to be a long shot at best and I would guess he has had more conversations with Mick and the coaching staff than any of us here.

Yet, I'm sure if we dig deep enough, we could find you criticizing Mick for suspicions of pushing kids out.

More good points. Donald Little didn't do much until his junior and senior years.

I disagree. I have read more comparative cases that show that Mike Williams will get another year.

Think higher level than that - ;)
The 2000 team was set up for a championship run, not for anything less.
Seems like a long, long time ago. But only 8 years - my how things change.
PS - when IS Nancy retiring?

Yeah I have seen those too. I guess I am just trained to assume the worst when it comes to UC and the NCAA. I do have a little more hope though after reading Dan Hoard's new column. He has more hope now too. Interesting to see what happens.
BIG IF
If he qualifies academically, he'll be part of UC's 2009 recruiting class.

Kirkland was all over the place in terms of production. Some nights he put up great numbers but i remember going to other games where he was booed out of the Shoe.

He was the most spotty player I have ever seen in a UC uniform his first 3 seasons. (only 20 years though :D) Not until his senior season did he begin to put it together only to seriously injure his knee.

Nobody, nobody, nobody, can predict his stat line and how that will stack up to Kirkland for better or worse. That is crazy to even think of. It was a comparison to size and position played. Something I thought people could relate to.

Kirkland was about 6'8" so he is a bit taller as far as I know

Nice breakdown post on the roster and current players. Makes it easier to see where the cats are at on paper than trying to kick it around in your head. Makes it easy to see if UC is going to do anything they are going to have to do it with what they now have. If not than losing 6 seniors 2011 could be another rebuilding year. For right now the odds are good at least 3 or 4 of these current players will turn out to be solid Big East players. I'll go with Wright and Gates as my first two of the newcomers. Who becomes the real deal out of the rest is a wait and see. Need at least a couple to exceed expections. Who will it be?

In my opinion, at this point, any scholarship offer should only go to a "must get, 5 star" recruit. Im not saying that Kilpatrick is not going to be a decent player but really, they have plenty of wing players. I just wish they would have saved some scholarships for next year.

Right, because those are just players are just out there waiting to come to UC. 2009 class was always going to be a weaker class b/c of the scholarship situation, but they still need players to close the gap if scholarships become available. I have a feeling Mick is focusing more attention on the 2010 and 2011 classes. Those should be really good classes.
In 2010 they are already in on some major players (Payne, Kenderick, all kinds of SG's, etc). In 2011 they already have a commitment from a stud PF and are in tight with a top 10 player. The needs for 2010 and 2011 will be greater than 2009.

I don't think any 5-star's are lining for UC either.
But I do believe this is the season to impress recruits with a resurgence that will lead some to want to play for UC. This is the year to impress!!!!
