We are a "slow, 3-pt. shooting team, with big wide bodies inside who we rarely throw the ball to, and when we do, they don't do much with it" type team.

Mick wants to be a run n gun team, but he has no one to get it down the court, and he has no one that can shoot.

I think so far UC is pretty solid on defense.I see it with my own eyes and just went to check the numbers on opponents shooting % and it was under 40% as i thought.
That passing around the perimter thing is not good looking on offense, however.

I have always wanted to know what Mick's philosophy is. He has never said anything about what type of defense or offense he wants or what type of players that fit well into his system etc...Nobody knows anything. Does he eventually want to be able to have players that are great in the transition game or does he want to play a half-court game? He seems okay the players shooting three's at will.

They played good defense, they had Memphis shooting bricks the 1st 11 minutes of the game. They had a opportunity to go up 15 pts if they made shots. But that would be difficult if you beat the press and have 3 on 2 and pull up and shoot 3 pt bricks, instead of attacking the basket. Or if you try to set picks and move 5 steps with the defender and get a foul called on you. Or if you stand around and wait on a pass to come to you and let a defender jump you for a steal. But the defense was solid.
The passing around the perimeter offense that they run, is the same offense I ran when I coached 6th graders 15 years ago.

I wonder if any of the SF's on the team can hit a shot from the elbow?

Well before the seaosn he wanted to go full court.
Since Cash got injured,he's said on tv the offense is a UCLA style offense.
I went to view film on it,and that is not what it is.It's(blank).

Right now we are a team without a true point, and so far in the games against teams we should beat, it hasn't seemed to affect us as much.
In games against upper tier talent, we seem to get timid and worrisome. Plays that seemed to work in other games are ran sloppily and if we turn it over early against equal or better talented teams, we start to look scared to throw the pass and turn it over even more.
We actually do play pretty good defense, and the numbers do show that. But, without Cash, we have not been able to turn that strong defensive effort into easy buckets.
Essentially, we are what alot of people thought we would be at this point: 10-3 going in to conference play, with a shot at 18 and an NIT bid, with a bubble chance at the NCAA if we can somehow get that number to 19 or 20.
The big difference is that we are 10-3 without a true point, which for me, means that regardless of what people think of the competition in the 10 wins, we are still further along this year than last at a similar point. And, we also seem to be a "second half of the season" team so I still can see us getting to 18.
Call me a glass half full guy, overly optimistic, a kool aid drinker, whatever you want, but for me the sky is not falling because we lost a game that (regardless of how much I would have liked to see us win or even thought we could win) we were picked to lose to a very athletic team.
I do not agree with some of the schemes we tried last night, and I hate that we lost. But, its over, next game is at Marquette, lets get ready for them.
I hope everyone enjoys the Orange Bowl Thursday and Happy New Year to all!

Happy New Year back at you. Nothing we did last year would indicate that we are a "second half of the season" team. We were horrible down the stretch, getting blown off the floor a couple times and losing to Bradley in the 1st round of the CBIT, after losing in the 1st round of the BE tourney.

Pardon me for explaining my position inadequately.
Last year after going 4-7 leading in to our game against Miami (OH) we then went 9-5 over our next 14 before falling hard from what I (and many others) attributed in part to a "lack of horses".
That stretch started on December 29 and ended with a win against South Florida on February 20.
So, while that may not constitute my previous statement of being a "second half of the season team" that is pretty darn close.
11 games leading up to Miami (OH), 19 games after, 14 of those 19 in the "stretch" I spoke of, including wins against ranked Louisville, Pittsburgh and West Virginia teams during that "stretch".
Hope that is more of a clarification of what I meant. I do think we were burnt out in the end over the final 5, losing two we should not have (Providence and DePaul) at home. I really believe this year that we can and will do better.

Last years team was a grind it out keep the game in the 60's type team. Had experienced seniors, even with less talent, could do that and keep the game close at least and even won a few games they shouldn't. This years team there is no rhyme or reason. Cain't tell what type game the coach or players are trying to run. It's just somewhere between run and gun and stall ball. One thing I'm almost sure of is that the basketball IQ of this team is really bad. Players have to make decisions on their own out on the court. A coach can only do so much as to teaching them how to do something. Basketball IQ is just a nice way of saying a player is halfway smart or dumber than a brick. For example you'd think a player would have sense enough on his own to be inbounds when he recieves a pass. You shouldn't have to tell a player make sure you are inbounds when you recieve a pass. Then it goes down hill from there to making pass's, taking bad shots and everything else. Those type of players won't be any smarter next game or next year. Huggins use to say he could teach a dog to go get the paper. Well I think there is a couple guys on this team you would never get your paper.
