Mick deserves a little credit for getting the Adidas' It Takes 5IVE tournament on campus. In my mind, it is like having campus visits by a slew of top recruits. The paper said 13 of the top 150 recruits were on campus.

sorry for those who have already read this in the Henry thread, I meant to start a new thread - I didn't want my "attaboy" for Mick to get loss.

Absolutely. There was very positive feedback for the event from teams, coaches and media.

Plans are already in place for the event to occur again next year.

Certainly having all those players on UC's campus is a terrific thing! Very cool, and hope it continues.

I just removed all the posts from this thread that attempted to turn this into yet another discussion about Coach Huggins. If you want to talk about him, either go to the "Where are they now" forum or go to a WVU forum.

I don't think that had anything to do with Cronin. It was the athletic department's choice of switching to Adidas that allowed for it to happen. UC also will be the host to the adidas football combines in the future. Staying with Nike would never have afforded either of these options because Ohio State gets all of the local Nike events.

It seems to me that Mick was instrumental in making the switch to Adidas. It seems I remember articles talking about the relationships he has developed with leaders of the Adidas camps.

I'm not sure how many other schools are aligned with Adidas, but I think it took more than just signing up with them.

I'm not sure how many other schools are aligned with Adidas. . . . .

Since it is Wikipedia, I cant guarantee 100% accuracy, but here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adidas#University_teams_sponsored_by_Adidas) is their list.

Mike,

Thanx for the link - there are 4 teams in the region who could have also hosted:
Notre Dame
Pitt
Louisville
Indiana

I think having it at UC, especially when 3 other BE schools could have hosted the event, illustrates that Cronin won a little victory in the recruiting game.

Props to Cronin, he's the hardest working man in the biz. I see him doing great things here. Hosting the tourney was great.

A main reason that has been cited for using UC as a venue is that it has one of the largest (if not THE largest) contigous basketball court in the country, with many side-by-side basketball/volleyball courts. It allows for multiple games and events to go on simultaneously. If I recall correctly, that was a huge selling point when the Shoe was first opened, in spite of the fact that the University does not promote that very much right now. I believe it was set up that way to assist with Intramurals. My guess is that NONE of the other Adidas schools have as vast a facility...

I've attended Club basketball events in Pittsburgh, Akron, Columbus, Ft. Wayne, Bloomington, Morgantown and Cincinnati. The Shoemaker is the second best facility I've seen (as far as number of courts under one roof) after the Spiece Fieldhouse (http://www.gymratsbasketball.com/gym_rats_general_information.php) in Ft Wayne, IN. Spiece has 8 courts. The Spiece is where I first saw Greg Oden play a few years ago.

Technically, Cincinnati has an advantage though since you can see all seven courts from one location. Spiece has a great layout but you can only see 2 or 3 courts at once. Using one location to scout players is not normally done, but it could be done by a coach with good eyes.

If you count the practice gym in Varsity Village, Cincinnati technically has 9 courts under one roof, but the practice gym is a 5 minute walk and an elevator ride away.

Univ of Akron and the Univ of Pitt, all have seven courts. But some of the courts are about a 100 yard walk from each other in different buildings. A bummer when its raining.

Great clarification. I didn't realize that Pitt and Akron had that size. Are these new facilities? Either way, it's nice that we can boast "under one roof". But if the Shoe is ever renovated or "goes away", I'm not certain that they'll replicate the retractable bleachers that currently exist at the Shoe.
