In the past day or so I have read the following:
Mick did something terrible and will be in some very serious trouble in the near future.
John Riek may be back in the fold.
That somebody knows what Alvin did but doesnt want to disclose that.
CAN WE STOP IT PLEASE! I love hearing news but this isnt news. I think these people are straight up making it up or their sources are too good.
If you got info PLEASE share it! If not, dont even start.

I do apologize Thegreatone if any of my posts fall under your umbrella of frustration.
For me (and I have stated this before) I used to be a news reporter and if someone says to me "don't say where you heard this" I have to respect that personally.
I am sorry if any of my posts have frustrated you, I truly am, but people have asked me in private as well and I have said the same thing.
Hope this helps a little.

I get frustrated at the lack of sources but I can get over that. What aggravates me is people posting things that are basically in code. Things like "Rumor has it there is a big named player that may or may not be committing to the Bearcats soon. He plays PG, SG, SF, PF, or C." If you don't want to reveal your sources, fine. But why can't you just come out and say something like "I have heard that so and so is going to be a Bearcat" instead of making people have to decode every freaking message? Who cares if you are wrong? It would just be nice to talk about the potential for a certain player to be a Bearcat instead of arguing about who the original message is actually about.

It's a good point JasonS, however for me (and only me) I will talk about a player if someone else brings him up first, and TRY to discuss all I can.
What I "know" as of this moment is that Bledsoe (PG) is probably out, Smith or Beatty will probably be the choices.
Riek is in play but there are still hurdles.
Santa Claus is fake, but the Easter Bunny is real (I SEEN IT!) ;)
Sorry, had to try to lighten the mood a little bit ;)

I wasn't singling you out and if that is how it is read, I apologize for that. I have not had any issues with your posts. I enjoy peoples' speculation when it comes to PGs or whether or not Riek is still in play and there are a lot of people who may have heard things from reliable sources. I am cool with all that. I just want to know what we are actually talking about. For example, your post above is great because you give your opinion based on what you have heard about Bledsoe and Smith and Beatty. We can discuss that. We can debate why we may want one player over another or what a certain player can bring to the table. We can't debate anything if we all don't know what we are debating. This board was great when people gave realistic opinions and didn't try to be comedians (your Easter Bunny comment is funny though) or Debbie Downers. There are still a lot of posters that talk basketball and make following UC Basketball that much more enjoyable. It just doesn't seem like the percentage of these posters is as high any more.

Oh, no worries, didn't take it personally, didn't think you were singling me out either.
Also, I take very very VERY little personally in this world. :)

Enjoying the positive atmosphere here! Thanks guys. So in light of the conversation, which player do you think fits best with our needs and system? Smith or Beatty? Assuming we land one.

Is friendly discussion happening here? Where is bearcatnews.com and what have you done with it?! :D

There are merits to both Beatty and Smith. Beatty is solid. He shoots 42% from the field, 40% from 3 pt. land, and averages 6.5 assist a game (and over 70% from the ft line). Downside is that he would add another body to the bloated jr. class unless someone is gone.
Smith is tough and extremely athletic. Most people say he is much better than Dion Dixon. Very good defensive player. My concern is that he actually is a combo guard and I think we need a true point. He would be extremely tough to pass over though if he wanted to be a Bearcat.

My concern also on Smith. When I hear combo guard it worries me right away! Seems to me this program, past coaches included, sometimes value athleticism in guards rather than just great ball handling ability.

Yes I agree. In my opinion you need a true point guard. A combo guard is fine to fill minutes. It's going to be very interesting the next few weeks.

It's incredible how smooth a thread can run when (certain) posters aren't involved...

My post is based on the assumption that Cash Wright gives a healthy/productive 25-30 minutes next year at the point. That leaves 10-15 minutes left to fill at the PG spot. Vaughn can be a good point in spots and for a few spurts so lets give him 5-10 minutes a game at the point. That leaves potentially up to 5 minutes left needed to cover the PG spot over the 40 game minutes. To me, that is negligible and something that you could find 2-3 guys depending on matchups (say Bishop/Dixon/Smith combination).
**
With Beatty you have a guy who could probably take all of the 10-15 minutes a game that Cash is not in and run the team without having to use anyone else. He's got good size for the PG spot - seems like a decent shooter and his assists are where you want them to be. But he only has 2 years in the program and as someone mentioned above the junior class is large (although in order to make it work for some of the new guys to be here, some of the junior class will have to leave this year.) but it still will be a 3-4 person class.
**
Smith brings 4 years (potentially) great defensive presence, good size and an ability to play the 2 as well. Yes, we seem to have a logjam at the 2 with Vaughn, Dixon, Davis and Kilpatrick but I think there will be much more 3 guard lineups next year especially if Riek does not make it.
**
Weighing everything out - if both guys want to come - I take Smith by a slight margin. I have been high on him ever since I first read about him and I like the fact that he comes from Chicago. Dion was a success this year out of Chicago and this kid (Smith) seems like a winner as well.

We definately need a TRUE point guard. We always hear of a guy that can play both, but it never works out to where he can adequately play the point at this level. This season should sell everyone on the need for a true point guard not another combo guard.

nice info...I'll take my chances with too many point guards. Beatty first

I was asked this morning if I had heard any news about Cronin or what he did. Can you elaborate on this? I have not heard a word about anything specific, just a few people calling me and emailing me to find out if I can tell them anything. I am lost on this.

I doubt he did anything. A mod wrote something about hearing about something Mick did and he couldnt say what. It is in the middle of the How many years would you give mick thread.
doubt anything will come of it.

I agree with Thegreatone.
Mick didn't "do anything" that I have heard of, and I think nothing will come of it.

Good. I just got that bad feeling when I received the emails and call this morning about this and then read the above on this message board.

Again, I can only say that from what I have heard he has done nothing wrong. I know there is a lot of stuff going on right now, but it is his job to clean that stuff up.

Let's not start any unsubstantiated rumors. If you have something credible to back up what you state, please state your source. Anonymous sources and "I heard from someone close to the program" are not credible sources.

No problem. I was just relating the first post to the emails I got. I was just asking what it could be about. I'm not trying to start a rumor. In most cases if I write on here, I am the source. I cannot always give up where the information came from. The people do trust me.

Trust me, Mike is around. As far as updates I'll let him answer that. Not to dismiss Mike's stuff but I think a lot of the info that's coming out on the board is pretty good.

We will all know soon enough. The suspense kills me, but in due time we will all have our answer and therefore we can begin discussing who will contribute next season. It tends to be a viscious cycle, but always playing out in the end.
