From what it looks like, Kelly is signing a boatload of quarterbacks... and I know not all of them are going to be able to play. What does everything think will be the fate of many of these signees and freshman QB's? HS quarterbacks have a reputation for moving to WR or the defensive secondary. Do you think some of these guys will move to those positions? Does someone have a list of current, signed, and verballed QBs?

I'm 100% certain Nick Davila graduated and we also have Mauk coming in this year. Brendon Kay just verballed, which sparked my question.

1. Dustin Grutza
2. Ben Mauk
3. Craig Carey
4. Tony Pike
5. David Wess (whom we already know is being moved around)
6. Chazz Anderson
7. Zach Collaros
+
8. Brendon Kay - 2008

I know I'm missing some.

I suspect that one or more of these incoming QBs will end up playing a different position. Some high schools run an offensive system that requires more of an athlete than a pure passer at the QB position. Dominic Goodman is a perfect example. He ran Colerain's high powered option attack in 2004. He rarely passed the ball (I think he attempted less than 50 passes over 15 games). His performance in the 2004 State Championship game convinced UC to offer him a scholarship. He now plays WR for the Bearcats.

My prediction - just from things that I have read - is that Collaros, Wess and Anderson will be moved in the future. I am sure they will be given every effort to be QBs, but their athletic ability will need to be on the field and most likely it won't be at QB.

According to the Enquirer, Pike would get the nod if the season started today.

"Right now it will probably be Tony Pike to start," Kelly said.

This is kind of surprising.

Great size for QB.

Florida had 2 "starting" QB's last season.

In the article, Koch seems to believe Mauk will start at QB, at least in the opener. He surmises this from his investigative reporting despite Kelly stating he has not determined who will start. Koch's rationale is that Mauk has experience playing at the BCS level. If experience at the BCS level is the key factor, then Grutza should start? In addition to being a starter for two years in a BCS conference, UC has played no less than three BCS schools (Penn St., Ohio St., Va. Tech) out of conference, which games Grutza started. Mauk never won the starting job at Wake until last year's season opener, in which he was injured and lost for the season. I'm not saying Grutza should start as I have never seen any of the other QBs play. But experience in a BCS program has to go to Grutza.

zhsesq, that's exactly what I thought when I read that article. It's as if the local writers haven't had it sink in yet that the BE is a BCS conference, or that UC is in a BCS conference. Dustin Grutza has started (including the Rutgers game last year) against probably 8-10 top 20 teams.

Like you said, not that it means Dustin SHOULD start, but please; don't make the argument for Ben based on that logic.

I'd put money on Ben Mauk being the starter in 9 days.

Same here.

Though if someone else is better than Mauk, that is good news for the overall talent level at the quarterback position for the Bearcats.

Actually, it was Davila who started vs. RU last year.

I don't think that Grutza has a shot at it. I don't know why, but it seems that Pike and Mauk have had the most 1st team reps and news about them.

It seems that Kelly is not satisfied with Grutza's ability to stay within the offense. Perhaps Grutza is too quick to scramble out of the pocket? Perhaps he is unable to make the reads and progress through the receivers to find an open one? Perhaps one is the result of the other?
