Looking ahead to next basketball season
Posted by BKoch at 4/15/2009 1:48 PM EDT on Cincinnati.com
If next year is a make-or-break year for UC basketball coach Mick Cronin, the prospects appear promising, at least on paper. The Bearcats have lost two players from last season – forward Mike Williams, who graduated; and forward Alvin Mitchell, who was dismissed from the program. Assuming that 7-2 center John Riek is cleared by the NCAA this time, the Bearcats won’t be lacking in size, with Riek, 7-0 Anthony McClain, 6-11 Ibrahima Thomas, 6-9 Yancy Gates and 6-7 Steven Toyloy on the front line, along with 6-6 Rashad Bishop. All-Big East guard Deonta Vaughn returns for his senior year and both Larry Davis and Dion Dixon return in the backcourt, along with point guard Cashmere Wright, who has been medically cleared to begin playing again after missing all of last season with a torn ACL. They’ll be joined in the backcourt by incoming freshman Sean Kilpatrick. With two scholarships to fill, Mick Cronin is also looking to sign another point guard for next season.
Perhaps as important as who will return for UC is who won’t return from the other Big East schools: UConn loses A.J. Price, Jeff Adrien, Craig Austrie and Hasheem Thabeet; Louisville loses Andre McGee, Terrence Williams and apparently Earl Clark, who’s expected to declare for the NBA draft; Marquette will be without its outstanding guard trio of Dominic James, Jerel McNeal and Wesley Matthews; Pitt loses point guard Levance Fields and dominant inside presence DeJuan Blair, who’s leaving for the NBA: Syracuse loses point guard Jonny Flynn to the NBA and possibly Eric Devendorf and Paul Harris as well. Georgetown is losing DaJuan Summers to the NBA draft and DePaul is losing Dar Tucker and Mac Koshwal.

He failed to mention Pitt also loses Sam Young and Tyrell Biggs to graduation. Pitt loses 4 starters, all key players. And Dar Tucker going to the NBA ensures another 0-18 Big East season for Depaul!!!! LOL.

Good find. There is plenty to look forward to for next year. Let's make sure we have a great fball season before basketball starts. Would love to have 10 plus wins in fball (and good bowl game) and 23 plus in bball (a run in the BEast tourney and in the NCAA). We may become a football AND basketball school.

I was under the impression that Riek had cleared already. Are we doing the NCAA shuffle again?

here's to hoping wright and reik(?) are not to slow to adapt after the year out. that may be the biggest variable but absent anymore untimely injuries we're in the best shape going into the year we've been in many years. a sub par performance next year would be reason to comtemplate our direction

Since all the other boards have been dissapointing and I've found myself constantly checking in here... I've decided to join in.

Is Mike Williams definitely gone, or is he still applying for another season?

Talent and personel was only one of quite a few problems last year. I don't know what to expect next season.

Anybody have any idea on the non-conference opponents next year? Are we still under contract with Memphis and UAB?

If Riek has really been working out and staying in shape in the off-season, the Riek-Gates starting frontcourt should be one of the best frontcourts in the nation by season's end. I'm really worried about our PG situation, and hope Cash is ready to play from the outset, but we should probably make the NCAAs regardless.

What a ridiculous statement. With Reik, who will be the most dominent player in college basketball next season, UC will win both the Big East and National Championship.

I don't expect Riek to start. The most likely scenario is Gates staring at C and the kid from OSU at PF.

Funny comment! The guy who will be the most dominent player in college basketball and will lead UC to the NC will not start, hilarious!

Yeah I know. My predictions are usually way off. Last season I actually predicted there was no way this team would make the post season. Silly me! :p

I know your not right on this one.
The kid from OSU (Ibrahama Thomas) will not be eligable until around Big East play next year so I doubt he starts.

He'll be eligible after the first week of December. Really going to miss the Quarter System.

Not true. Just about everyone else thought we would be in the NIT at least. Halfway through the Big East schedule, there was even constant discussion about our chances at the NCAA tournament with most people thinking we still had a shot.

Then unfortunately it looks like Gates and Toyloy until December.

Most semester schools only go 1 week longer than UC...any transfer would only miss one or two more games

I thought you were talking about preseason.
I predicted 18 wins when Cash went down with injury. I guess that makes me better than you. Just thought I'd thump my chest like you do.

ND loses a lot of quality players as well. They'll be decent, but the talent pool just got shallower.

Actually, I think Mike Brey might be fighting for his job the next couple of seasons. He loses 4 key seniors and really only returns experience with Harangody and PG Tory Jackson. If they struggled with all that talent this year (McAlarney), just think what next year will be like?

Ayers will adequately replace McAlarney on the outside.

I said they'll be decent, not good. Which I believe they will be. They might actually be more athletic next year, which will help the loss of shooters.

I'll will say this the "correct" way so I am not attacking the poster, just this statement above.....actually it's sad that I'm going to say this but here it goes. I PRAY Reik will be on the team. The poster who makes these *(&^$ statements is once again going to look extremely silly and if not already, will lose every ounce of credibility that a post can have.
I have never read as many posts, that consistently say nonsense. PLEASE REIK make the team, PLEASE. Isn't that sad, that I actually hope this kid makes the team that bad for the wrong reason? Thank you to whoever the poster is that consistently posts such things. It really pulls everyone together.<rolling my eyes>
