6-1 guard from Lafayette (IN) Jefferson HS who averaged 27 ppg as HS junior and led state of IN with 52% on 3-pt FG shooting.

Purdue was his favorite but Boilers are full on scholarships.

Likes UC and has been offered by Bearcats.

Not rated/one star. Has had some interest from Ball State, Butler, Dayton, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Providence. Not sure he is the high impact player we would like, but Mick knows better than I...

Late bloomer. Scoring machine. He is really starting to take off this AAU season against better competition. Don't pay attention to Rivals rankings they are not accurate most of the time.

Meaningless (NR or 1*) because the young man can play. Doing VERY well in AAU tourneys this spring with SYF Players team.

Gale Catlett signed a player from Lafayette Jeff in the late 1970's. 7-footer Mike Miller never panned out at UC though.

"Lafayette (Ind.) Jefferson junior guard Jesse Berry is a scoring machine and is generating a lot of interest. Cincinnati, Butler, New Mexico and Ball State have offer. He said Xavier, Kentucky, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana and Dayton were also recruiting him. Berry said he was recruited by Memphis when John Calipari was the coach there and the new staff at UK has called several times in recent weeks."

Not rated in this case he hasn't been evaluated not that he isn't good. I wonder if he hasn't played in a lot of aau ball?

Any chance we can accelerate his graduation? :D

Thanks for the info!

Not getting rated or being a 1 star means nothing. It probably means he wasn't on a good AAU team. Most of the publicity these kids get is from going to the summer tournaments where all the other stars go.

ESPN has a full evaluation on him and it's a pretty good assessment. Kind of reminds me of Vaughn coming out. It says he's very streaky and can score a lot of points in a short time or miss quite a few in a row. Also says he has good strength, but needs to bulk up when he gets to college.

Maybe not but potentially the sharpshooter we've been lacking since field.

I stand corrected (from many sources). Fair points, all. I'm always happy to get a "late bloomer" who flies under the radar. Reminds me of one Deonta Vaughn...

Nowhere did I say grudge.

2009 minus 1977 equals 32 years, not 40.

I went to college with Rik Wehmeier, his son.

The Wehmeiers moved to Indy in the 1960's. Rik and his younger brother (who was 1st round draft pick by the Cubs) went to Brebeuf HS there.

We could use a consistent threat from 3 point range. Deonta will be gone and someone else has to be able to knock down open 3s. Nobody on the current team seems to have that ability yet.

Thomas has a tendency to shoot threes. Not really sure if we want a 7 footer hanging around the arch. :D

I live in W Lafayette. Jesse is a great scorer. Makes the news regularly during HS basketball season.

This is a repost from earlier this month from our local paper...

On a side note, I came across some interesting information regarding Mr. Berry. I found this while browsing another site, so I do not take credit for anything.

"Berry's Stock Rising"

Lafayette (Ind.) Jeff senior-to-be guard Jesse Berry is a rising prospect on the national scene. He holds a handful of offers and is hoping for more to come his way.

The high-scoring 6-foot-1, 170-pound point guard averaged 16 points and six assists for the SYF Players this spring after pouring in 27 points a game as a junior at Lafayette Jeff. He scored over 40 points six times during his junior season, including games of 51 and 55 points.

But this summer, Berry is trying to become more of a combo guard.

"When I talk to a lot of college coaches, they tell me I'm going to be a combo guard, where I can play one and two," Berry said. "I'm just working hard on my point guard skills."

Berry is also seeing his list of schools grow. He has offers from Cincinnati, Butler, Dayton and Ball State and is hearing from other schools like Xavier, Notre Dame, New Mexico, Minnesota, Indiana, Memphis, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Providence, Arizona, Texas and Kentucky others.

"I am really liking everybody right now," he said. "I want a school that will be the best fit for me. I want to fit in well and do what I have been doing."

As far as the interest from UK, Berry told me recently the Wildcats new staff intrigues him enough that he anticipates taking a closer look.

"I had been hearing from Kentucky and it continued after the coaching trade off," he said. "I have still been talking to them."

Berry said he hopes to make a decision in late July or early August.

* Compliments of Jody Demling. http://www.courier-journal.com/blogs/demling/blog.html

Berry is also rated as a 3* star prospect. As of a month ago, he was unrated and unscouted. He is moving up the charts fast and we were the first BCS school to offer. I think the kid could have a very bright future. Unfortunately, it seems he is waiting for "big offers" to come in. We'll see.

Additionally, he is the only guard that has been offered for the Class of 2010 (at least reported).

Would be a good signing. Look how much success X had with Redord and how much UC had with Field Williams and Darnell Burton. Those 3 point specialists come in handy sometimes.

it would be nice to see guys like field and darnell, and the gunslinger lazelle. maybe larry davis will do that this year feeding off cash's penetration?

He really has to be a PG at the college level. At this point he is around 5'8". Obviously he may grow, but even if he adds a couple inches being a sub 6 ft SG guard at the college level is a tough thing.

Mike Miller didn't play for UC in 1978-79. Must have been early or mid-70's as I do recall the name.

Remember Big Bob as well from Louisville, KY.! He was a very good player for UC with Cummings, Mike Jones , Eddie Lee. Collier et.al. Still think Mike Miller was at UC for a year or 2 in the 70's. Not an impact player.

We could use a guy like Steve Collier.
