My initial feeling on him was whether he was good enough for the BE considering he played at Hampton.
But, if Gillespie and UK felt he could contribute in the SEC, I think he can contribute in the BE as well. Probably not a starter, but a good depth guy, which is what is needed.
I think the question now would be if he is better than the guy they could bring in next year if they hold it, which would also help balance the classes better. Personally, I would bring Pilgrim in and hope for the best (assuming he's eligible to play this year).

I thought that I had read that he only has one year left of eligibility. Maybe that was if he had to sit out another year due to another transfer. Everything that I have read about him is that he has all of the skills and tools but he just does not play hard. Maybe sitting out a year will make him that much more hungry. I am not sure if we need another wing player but at 6-8 he could play the four spot at times.
I hope that Thomas is the emotional and team leader this year that he has been hyped to be. If we have a player on his teammates in the right way, we may eliminate some of the laziness.

What's the word on Pilgrim? Has he transferred to UC? Or is he just considering UC?

He has 2 years left. We are looking at him and he is looking at us. The question is do we want to offer him a scholly or do we want him to walk on. Also does he want to walk on or does he demand a scholly.

Not sure I'd give up one of the 3 potentially available scholarships for the 2010 class for this guy.

Just curious why not. Do you think he is not as good of a talent as the 4th player we will bring in in 2010? Is it to balance out the scholarships better? Do you not think that he has the talent?
Everything I have seen shows that he is a high talent player so I just don't know why people don't want him.

He is talented no question. I am hearing mixed messages on him. Some credible people that I know within the UK program say that he is not worth the trouble. He did not even start at Hampton his freshman year. However others that I have talked to who know have seen him practice at UK say he is a brusier down low.
His problem is that he can not stay out of his own way. He has the talent and the body to be a big time play but he makes knucklehead decisions that keep him moving backward and not forward in his progress as both a player and a student.
That is where the risk lays.

He did not start the season his freshman year because he had a broken foot.
But I thought that we were still chasing Momo :)

If a guy is being compared to Al Harrington I'll give up two scholarships.

UK was slating him as a backup PF. We are set at that position right now unless you have a shot at a top player. He is not a top player.
I save the scholarship to find someone with better upside coming out of H.S. next year with one of the 3 scholarships we'd have. Unless he walks on to play in his hometown, this one feels a bit like like another Ryan Pettinella.

The question is would you take Pilgrim or Brandon Mobley for 2010. Both are back up pf's.
Yes Mobley will be a Bearcat if we want him. He wants to play with Cashmere at UC and is tight with him. Considers him a mentor and somewhat of a big brother. Down to UC, South Carolina, and IU. UC is his favorite.
Who do you take because you can't put Pilgrim on sholly for 2 years and take a guy like Mobley? Mobley is not a stud and will take a few years to develop. He is a 3 star and will be a backup at least for his first two years on campus.
Something to think about.
Also I forgot that I did hear Pilgrim's mom works at UC so he might be able to walk on and not pay for school.
At this point who knows.

Princeton U. guy that wanted better competition and liked Huggs and wanted a school with a particular major. We fit. He never saw the floor becuase Huggs left and he de-commited (de-walked on?) I think he ended up at either KSU or VA or both.

If his mom works at UC and he can go for free I would see no reason why he wouldnt be a walk-on. That would be huge if true and would keep 1 more scholly for 2010. I like the potential of Mobley and think he is a good program guy, that said i think we need 2 more Big's for 2010 to give us the depth we need.

In a perfect world this would all work out. I don't have any info but something tells me it is not that simple with the NCAA.

Walk-ons don't get room and board or books or all of the other amenities that come with an athletic scholarship. Those things are also not included in tuition remission. Even if this is allowable by the NCAA (I have no idea on that) I doubt he comes to UC as a walk-on when he's got scholarship offers from other schools unless he really has a strong reason to do so (in which case he'd probably be at UC already).

It says on the scouting report he is a potential NBA draft pick. Hmm if he has the tools to play someday in the NBA I think he can play in the Big East...

Yes - Matt was the skinny kid we saw in the stands at UC in the early 2000's.
Not skinny any more.

PENN actually. He was on scholarship, not a walk on. He ended up at Virginia.

You can't be serious? You have to have more talent than potential NBA draft pick to play in the Big East! If you're not top 3 at your position in your high school class, you might as well go play in the SEC.

Sounds like he hasnt reached his potential based on the review in the link...Do we take a chance on someone as quoted as "playing great for 5 minutes, and then disappearing for 10"?
How many years does he have left?

Right now we need another athletic big body for depth IMO whether it's Pilgrim or someone else. If he wants to play he will have to show it. He won't get a chance to "take 10 minutes off". What coach is going to let a kid *&^&* off on the floor for 2/3 of his playing time when he's got other choices to go to on the bench. What kid is going to continue to *(^&* off when he knows the coach won't play him if he does? Not playing hard might be an option when you are the best player on the team (in HS or Hampton) but when you can be replaced with someone who can do the same job and wants to...all of the sudden it's not an option anymore.
This is why we need depth...and a good coach will be able to use the depth to get them all to play hard...or they won't play. I say bring him in...he's got a Big East body and atheletic potential through the roof...and a decent outside shot to boot.
Next year we have two spots opening up for sure and maybe more (NBA, transfer, grades, etc)...USE THE SCHOLLY...if it can help this year. We won't have 5 star recruits knocking down our door...and if we do...we can make room if we have to.

Mick and George Jackson could get every bit of potential and hard work out of Pilgrim. I realize he has to want it but when he competes, he is a beast. I do not know much about him taking time off on the court but he can play.
Also, I would not be surprised if he decided to walk on if a scholly is not offered. His options are now very limited.
