I know that stud freshemen redshirt at some of the bigger name programs, and some choose up and coming schools such as UC because they want the playing time.
I do not want this thread to be a debate on who should and shouldn't Redshirt!
I do want to know who is playing this year that Redshirted? Will Redshirting this year affect the depth of the team? I suspect that it will pay huge dividends next year as we get they have a year to adjust to college, learn the playbooks, and hit the weight-room. Is the luxury of Redshirting most of this year's class a sign that UC is now included as a bigger name program?
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic as we prepare to begin the season one week from today!!

When I was in school ('80-'85), and for some time thereafter, I hardly ever remember guys being redshirted, if at all. I'm not sure we even had as many guys on scholarship as we could. 2 years ago, things were pretty dire, and we couldn't redshirt, instead starting many freshmen. As a testament to them, now juniors, we can afford to redshirt many, of not all of the freshman, and not miss them. This will pay hge dividends in the future, always allowing us to have players available with more maturity, strength and size, and better understanding of the playbook. At some point, as a bigtime program, we should get some freshmen that are so good, we can't keep them off the field. Maybe we're not quite to that point yet, but our depth is so much better, and will continue to get better because of the redshirting.

Most larger programs redshirt ALL of their lineman, have them sit on the sidelines for one or two years while they bulk up, and start playing as a sophomore or junior. BK, however using quicker smaller lineman may never use this timeline so he can pick and choose the athletes he wants to redshirt based on depth. Redshirting receivers really surprised me since it's been the weak point for as long as I can remember. (Wasn't watching Tony Smikle in the 1999 Wisconsin game GREAT!?!?!??)

This are lists I compiled from a few websites. I am sure there are a few errors. I personaly think that the redshirting is a good thing since it gives the kids a chance to grow another year, get familiar with the team and get confortable with college.
