Kelly on Byrd’s lack of recruitment (and Sam Griffin’s):

“I got a kid out here, Sam Griffin, who’s 6-foot-4, 240 pounds, and didn’t have another Division I offer. He could possibly start for us at offensive tackle as a freshman. Nobody offered him. It doesn’t surprise me, because coaches are so locked into profiles. My background is I had to be the guy who couldn’t take the profile guy because I never got them. I was in Division II; I was in the MAC. So when I see a guy out here like Sam Griffin that we can get who had no offers – and Terrill Byrd reminds me of the same kind of player – it doesn’t surprise me that he wasn’t offered Division I scholarships. But there are so many guys around who do well. Somebody’s missing the boat.”

A lot of so-called top tier D-I BCS teams appear to have some base height/weight/speed requirements they consider before recruiting someone. Unfortunately for them and fortunately for UC, Byrd did not meet these requirements. What these requirements fail to measure is how good the football player is. Byrd was an absolute beast for Colerain especially during their state championship run in 2004. He was the NATIONAL Defensive Player of the Year. So what if he is "just" 6' tall. The kid can play. If he improves his conditioning and can stay on the field more, he may just become an All-American. And if he continues to improve, some NFL team is going to draft him and will most likely be glad that they did.
