SE Miss St gets a good return on the kickoff and is driving.
1st and 10 at the UC 28. Defense is a little bit on their heals right now.

Announcers are referring to SE Miss. St. as See-Mo.
1st and 10...nearly a sack, screen is incomplete.
UC shows blitz, forces SE Miss St. to take a timeout on 2nd and 10.

Benton had two good runs on the opening UC drive. Bradley Glatthaar scored on a 2 yard run. First play in 2nd drive is out of a 5 wide out, no back set. Pass is incomplete. 2nd play is a screen for 4 yards. 3rd down pass complete to Barwin for a 1st down at the SE Miss. St. 36. Roughing the passer tacks on 15 more yards. 1st and 10 at the SEMSt 49.

Mauk sounds good and is getting the ball out quick. SEMO is outmatched and this is a good game for some practice. The defense got the TO, but needs to be better.
The kicking game scares me.

1st down and 10 at the SEMSt. 31. UC operating almost exclusively out of the shotgun with 4 or 5 wideouts with no huddle. Now facing 3rd and 9.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 07:25 PM
4th down. Kicking team coming on for the 47 yard FG attempt. Kick is no good.
jkwuc89

Hard to tell how big the crowd is. They have not shown a full stadium shot yet.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 07:28 PM
SEMSt. goes three and out. Gains 9 on 1st, loses 4 on 2nd, pass incomplete on 3rd. Time to punt.

Seems like a lot of runs with Mauk. How is his speed?

Big pickup on 3rd and 10. 1st down Bearcats near midfield after gain of 18.

Converted CB to WR Marshawn Gilyard has 4 catches.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 07:35 PM
Nice QB draw by Mauk. Line opened up a HUGE hole in the middle. Tell you what...you better be in GREAT shape to run this offense. No huddle, quick snaps, spread across the entire field.
With 4:50 to go, UC has gained 12 first downs to 2 for SEMSt.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 07:36 PM
Holding penalty wipes out a nice gain. Screen play to Moore gains 11 back.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 07:38 PM
165 total yards for UC
34 yards for SEMSt.
Bearcats need to capitalize on their drives. Only 6 points to show for the ball movement so far.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 07:39 PM
SEMSt. picks off the pass and returns it back to UC territory. Three drives into SEMSt. territory have yielded just 6 points. You cannot let an underdog hang around like this.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 07:41 PM
Defense steps up. Two plays end in QB sacks. SEMSt. goes 3 and out. UC will get the ball back. Now the offense needs to SCORE!!!!
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 07:45 PM
Offense shoots itself in the foot again. Moore after a big run fumbles the ball. SEMSt. ball around the UC 40.

SEMSt. - 0

SEMSt. nice run down to the UC 29...fumbles...recovered by UC.
UC offense will get another shot.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 07:54 PM
1st and 10 at the SEMSt. 44 after a couple of nice runs.
Deadball personal foul against UC is going to move the Bearcats back 15.
Offense is making WAY TOO MANY silly mistakes.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 07:55 PM
56 yard TD pass to Gilyard if it stands...there is a flag down.
Ref picks up the flag...no penalty...TOUCHDOWN BEARCATS!

Gilyard is having a good first game at WR.
4th and 1 and the Cats jump off sides. Up 13-0, but sloppy in a lot of aspects of this games.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 08:09 PM
SEMSt. drives to the UC 1 but is unable to push it in. They settle for the short field goal.
UC - 13
SEMSt. - 3
8:11 left in the 1st half.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 08:11 PM
Gilyard - 5 catches, 101 yards, 1 TD
Not too shabby for 1.5 quarters of football.

I guess Rutgers is the only team not struggling with their cream puff opp. Louisville is letting Murray st. stay in the game like Cincy.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 08:34 PM
4th down with 5 seconds to go. Kelly is going to run a play and not punt the ball. SEMSt. calls a TO to set up their defense.

08-30-2007, 08:34 PM
The WR for Rutgers has over 200 yds in the first half.

There is the first defensive TD
Attempt at 2 fails; however, I feel we have a better chance at 2 than 1 at this point.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 09:06 PM
Mickens picks off the SEMSt. pass and returns it 45 yards for the TD!
UC going for the 2 point conversion. 2pt attempt fails...Mauk pass is knocked away, incomplete.

3rd TO inside the SEMO 20 for the Cats. This time on the 1 inch. Glatthar can't get the one yard. 2nd and 1. There he is Glatthar in for one yd for a TD. AND A MADE PA>
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 09:13 PM
Screen pass complete, fumble forced at the SEMSt. 7, returned to the SEMSt. 1.
UC ball, 1st and goal just inside the 1.
1st down play - Mauk is tripped up by his own center...loses 3.
2nd down play - Glatthaar gets to the 1
3rd down play - Glatthaar scores on the 1 yard TD run.
PAT is GOOD!
UC - 32
SEMSt. - 3
The score is now representative of how UC is dominating this game.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 09:19 PM
Tony Pike now in at QB for the Bearcats.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 09:26 PM
Personal foul on 3rd down against SEMSt. will move the ball inside the SEMSt. 10. Officials are measuring for the 1st down. It is now 4th and less than 1. Benton gets the handoff on 4th down and waltzes into the endzone untouched. TD Bearcats! PAT is good.
UC - 39
SEMSt. - 3
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 09:36 PM
Jacob Ramsey - what a great 60 yard TD run! But, it is coming back due to a penalty.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 09:38 PM
Pike has looked good so far. Passes are accurate, he is making good decisions, has good speed when he runs. Like the 360 announcers said, you can see why Coach Kelly likes him. He just ripped off a huge run down to the SEMSt. 20.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 09:44 PM
Despite the dominating performance and the lopsided soon to be win, the coaches will have plenty to work on over the next 7 days. Way too many silly mistakes (penalties and turnovers). The Bearcats will need to play a lot sharper and crisper next week when Oregon State comes calling.
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 09:44 PM
End of the 3rd quarter:
UC - 39
SEMSt. - 3
jkwuc89

The nice thing about ESPN360 - No commercials! There are breaks in play but the stream never breaks away to commercial.
The announcers on the stream are pretty good. And the video/sound quality over my AT&T DSL Elite connection is very good.
BTW...UC has just put another TD on the board. Pike throws a TD pass to Ben Guidugli. PAT is missed...again! The missed kicks could be a cause for serious concern.
UC - 45
SEMSt. - 3
Total NET yards so far:
UC - 512
SEMSt. - 211
jkwuc89
08-30-2007, 09:51 PM
Fumble SEMSt. - recovered by UC at the SEMSt. 18. That's 6 turnovers for the Redhawks.
Jacob Ramsey finishes off the short drive with a 1 yard TD run. PAT is good.
UC - 52
SEMSt. - 3
UC now has over 600 yards of offense - over 300 rushing and over 300 passing.

Just got back from the game, 59-3 Bearcats! I saw a lot of good things and a lot of bad things from this team. The good things are pretty obvious, the bad things are too many penalties, bad special teams play, need to stop the run better.

Agreed about way too many mental mistakes. Late hit, jumping offsides on 4th and 1, etc. etc.
Gilyard had a great game even with the 2 drops.
Why use Goodman as a decoy so much? He was open quite a bit but never seemed to be the first WR except on 2 (I think it was only 2) WR screens, one of which was a gadget play and he immediately lateraled to Benton.
Speaking of Benton, he looked good. He should start. Moore fumbles too much, but is a very good backup right now otherwise. It will be interesting to see how much time Ramsey gets to develop.
I definitely think Mauk is the man right now. Pike looked good too, but Mauk was mostly crisp and slick except for back to back passes in the first half (the 2nd of which was intercepted). He is not as quick or elusive as Grutza, but he can run ok. I hope Grutza is taking the 3rd string position well. He is a good kid, and I think he will have his day (if only that) at least once more before he graduates. Mauk's biggest issue will be working on timing, but in this offense I imagine that is the issue with all the QB's. I felt like Mauk and Pike both had an arm at least as strong as Davila but both appeared to be more accurate. I will be interested to see what happens next Thursday when a real Div I defense is rushing the QB.
What else can be said about the kicking? It sucked and the 2 pt conversation attempts weren't any better. I don't think either kicker can be that bad. If that was the freshman who kicked/missed the 48 yarder, I'd say keep trying to give him the shot. He probably had nerves galore working against and I say give him a chance to chill. Ruffin was killed here as a freshman, I remember people getting on Lovell at first, both ended up being very good kickers. The FG would have gone at least 55 and did not miss by much, slight wide right. I think that make could have worked wonders for any kicker (sorry, I am not sure who kicked then).

I agree with most of the post ....I can't emphasize enough how bad the kicking game was...this will cost the Cats 2 wins this year IMHO - not only were they missing PAT's and FG's, the kickoffs were short and returned for good yardage (although that improved a bit in the 2nd half)
I thought Pike looked better than Mauk - Mauk missed too many open receivers..threw high a lot...how tall is he? he looked short out there (esp compared to Pike who looked like he could see the field a lot better)
Why was Goodman invisible?
Once the defense got into the flow, I thought they looked pretty good (except for the penalties, which were excessive). Every time SEM threatened, the D came up with a play..the beginning of the 2nd half was just lights out...TD, TD, Bam!...Gotta give both of those to the D.
The crowd was a very quiet, typically boring Cincinnati crowd..'course it was a Thursday night game against a nothing team, without much in the way of students.
All in all a good game to work out the kinks...I don't know if they can work out the special teams kinks though...soccer team, help!!

I thought that Yingling did a good job on the kickoffs. In the 1st half, Ramsey's kickoffs were short, ugly line drives. But Yingling got a lot of air under his kicks and got them to about the 5 yard line, which isn't bad now that kickoffs are coming from the 30. You are going to see a lot of returnable kicks this year, and hang time will be crucial; Yingling had it, Ramsey did not. For now, I think Yingling has got to do the kickoffs. Ramsey may still be the choice on FG and XP, though.
Gilyard looks good. Goodman was strangely quiet. I though the DEs were very good, but there was clearly something missing on the inside without Byrd. Manalac looked better at MLB than Revels, which isn't surprising given his experience. The entire defensive backfield was in midseason form.
The late hit penalties were damaging and need to stop. Don't be surprised if Ramsey winds up the #2 RB by the end of the year. He and Benton are built for this offense - capable of changing direction quickly and sliding through traffic. Moore is more of a one-cut, north-south runner, which is less valuable here (plus, he has a lot of trouble holding on to the ball).
Bradley Glaathatar - 3 yds rushing, 2 TD. I think this will be pretty common for him this year - he doesn't really have the speed, shiftiness, or pass-catching ability for this offense, but he will be valuable in short yardage.
