The Athlon College Basketball annual is out. It has UC 8th in the BE, making the NCAA tournament as a 9th seed and going out to Gonzaga in the first round. Stephenson being named Newcomer of the Year.

Wow that is out early. I always buy a mag every year for the college hoops preview but around mid October.
As for the ranking. I am glad. I like this group being an underdog by the experts. It is better than picking them in the top two or three and these guys possibly reading their press clipings. When you doubt a team that is deep, talented, and hungry you better watch out. That dog might jump up and bite you.
Can't wait for the season either but lets get a win for the football team on Monday first.

They really have matchups for the tourney? I'd like to see someone save their picks for the tourney and see how many teams they correctly picked and if any matchup actually occurred.

That's a keeper. We should compare it with what actually happens. I can't imagine it even being close to "match-ups" and first round winners and losers (let alone the order of the BEast). Just a gimmick to sell mags...

Yea, but it's still kind of fun to look at, like Lunardi's bracketology.

If Stevenson is the conference newcomer of the year then UC will finish higher than 8th in the BE. With the returning talent, and a big year by LS, I would say a top 4 finish.

Yeah, I love it when people pick us to finish in the bottom half of the conference. That has helped propel us to excellence the last few years... Oh wait...

You should never like being picked low. Eventually, the math works out that the "experts" know what they are talking about. I'll take being picked 1st in preseason every time over being picked 8th.

I would not place any credibility in this at all. Practice has not yet started and these "experts" are prediciting who will make the field and the opponents? Ridiculous. Take it for what it is worth - fodder to feed blogs.

Picking us as a one and done in the NCAA means they think we are back to the level our program was at in the 1990's.
I don't think we are there yet....

I'm trying to think of 1990's teams that this current team will be as good as. Let's say the 90-91 team. After that I struggle. Which teams do you think are the equivalent of today's team?

Probably better than the 1991-1992 team if Stephenson is allowed to play.

The '91 team was better than you think. They played Kentucky (best SEC record that season) nip-n-tuck in The Shoe.

Better than FF team? We'll see about that.

It is hard to compare them to any 1990's team because the style is so different. We have good players now, but we don't have ANY of the intimidating style of play. We used to have teams loaded with guys who scowled at the opposing teams and intimidated them before the opening tip-off even happened.
It wasn't uncommon in the 1990's for our team's talent level to be greatly elevated by the attitude level. I just haven't seen that yet by anyone over the past 3 years.
I hope LS brings some swagger and attitude....
