Marquis Teague, top 5 recruit in 2011, recently added North Carolina to his list. What no one has noticed (probably because it still seems to be a longshot for any team not named Louisiville (or IU or maybe now UNC) is that he stopped considering Cincinnati but now has the Bearcats on his list again.
Let's just say it's another instance of the Lance Stephenson Effect

Cincinnati: "I really like their coaches; they are great guys. They've got Lance (Stephenson, a highly-ranked prospect from New York) up there and he's about to do real good. I talk to him sometimes. He tells me how it goes. He said the coaches are still cool when you get there, but they push you and that's what I want. When they get on that court, they let you play. They want to win. I work out with (former Arlington star) Deonta Vaughn a lot and tells me they let you play if you do the right thing with the ball."

I love reading those comments. It is good that he has a relationship with DV and speaks to Lance. Let's shock the world and land this one!!

Justin Jackson also commented that on his visit he hung out with Lance and loved all the guys. Lance is huge for recruiting.

It may be good that he has those relationships. Except neither player is likely to be there when he arrives. Vaughn will certainly be gone as this is his last season. Stephenson is supposedly a one-year college player, leaving early for the NBA thereafter. In the end, I am not sure how much impact, if any, those relationships will have. What would impact his decision is if one or both of those players is drafted in to the NBA next spring and subsequently makes an NBA roster.

Yes but Chane should be here and maybe Mr. Gates?

This season is going to go a long ways when it comes to recruiting. If we finish top 5 in the BE there is going to be a lot of positive recruiting momentum that might just allow us to snag either Kendrick or Teague. Most likely case is Kendrick since I still believe Teague is Ville's to lose but got to love those comments. Lance is a huge recruiting tool.
I will be suprised if both Gates and Stephenson are here when Teague would potentially get here but I wouldn't be suprised if both were here next year. I'm not saying Lance will stay for more then one year but it wouldn't shock me, especially with the talent in this years up coming draft which figures to be one of the best in awhile. A line-up of Cash, Kendrick, Stephenson, Thomas, and Gates would be scary good...here's to hoping.

Either way you slice it, those are positive comments from Teague. While he did complement all of the programs, it's nice that he has talked with the higher profile players on our team and has a feel for what is expected of him.
I don't think it really matters if DV or Born Ready would be on the 2011-2012 season. Born Ready would be a junior. It is highly unlikely that he is around. However, Teague is a top notch player and is/could be considered a "one and done" in his own right.
I think much of our future recruiting relies on the team's success this season and how involved Born Ready is in the offense/game.

My guess is Gates jumps after his junior year and Lance will be gone immediately after this one.

Gates has a long way to go to be considered a First Round Pick. And, only first round picks are guaranteed money.

True, but that probably won't stop him from leaving before he is ready.
All of these guys are bad for listening to the wrong people when they're considering whether to leave.

someone here actually has sound reasoning when it comes to the NBA draft and players leaving early. like you said, it doesn't matter if he is ready or not. he will go when he wants to go.

Just because Gates has a massive body doesn't mean he will go pro in two years. I don't think he is even close and to be honest i think it would be very smart for him to stay all four. I think he will prob. never truly dominate in the BEAST because of the crazy talent that continues to flow through it.

Nice find! I love seeing these comments from players looking at UC!

I think you all are underrating Gates if you don't think he could leave after this year. I'm worried, and I say if he wants to he could definitely leave end of junior year no problem.

My God people, Gates was a Freshman! Look at some of the sophmore leaps we've seen.. Thabeet, Griffin, etc.

Griffin was far from a sophomore leap. He was on every pre-season 1st Team All American list before his sophomore year.

Griffin put up
Freshman 14.7 / 9.1
Soph 22.7 / 14.4
Leap of 6.0 / 5.3 (looks like a leap to me..)

its not a question of whether or not it would be smart for him to stay all four. everyone thinks that.

Check your math on that one.........
However, that is crazy improvement. It's one thing to have a difference of 8 points if you go from 2 to 10, but it is a completely different realm when you go from 14 to 22 (not to mention improving the rebounds to 14)!

He won't leave, unless he expects to be in the first round. He would need to make huge improvements in several aspects of his game to get to that point (shooting, defense, rebounding, court awareness). That, or he is ignorant enough to believe someone who shouldn't be giving him advice about his draft status. Typically the head coach makes phone calls to get a sense of his draft status. If he's a lock to be a high pick, Mick would, in all likelihood tell him that he'd love to have him back, but the smart thing to do is to go pro. If he's projected as mid first round, he has to decide if he wants to try to improve his stock and draft position, but he'd probably hear more arguments for turning pro vs. staying.
If Gates plays only slightly better than last year, and decides to turn pro anyway, he may not be drafted at all, let alone in the first round. He'll actually have lost some of the potential that he had coming out of HS and after his freshman year. There are alot of guys with great big bodies that don't play pro ball (at least not in the NBA).
Best case scenario, he improves enough to be projected in the early second round, so he comes back for a monster Junior year. Maybe he improves a ton & his stock rises dramatically, and UC has alot of success this year. Worst case scenario, he becomes a 4 year contributor, with a huge body. No real bad options for UC fans.

I think that you will see a real improvement in Gates. He was just a freshman on a not so good team in a really good league. Add in that they did not have a point guard to open things up. With his training this summer, I would be real disappointed if he does not hit the glass hard this year. He should add to his rebounds and points off of rebounds. I think we as fans got after him too much this past year expecting him to carry this team. With the players we have this year, it will really motivate him and open things up for him.

Gate will benefit extremely from Cash and Lance being on the floor and the increased penentration that will bring.
