Does anyone know if Oscar Robertson helps the coaching staff with recruiting? Can he? I think it would help if a recruit got to talk to the "Big O" about the history and tradition of UC basketball while on a campus visit.

I think it could help....although I don't think kids today care much about him. He played 30 years before they were even born. Players don't relate basketball with him at all.

I beg to differ. Have you ever seen Lebron James in an interview talking about the comparison between him and The Big O? The man can't stop smiling.:D

If they could get Kenyon to drop a kid a phone call, it'd probably carry more weight.

I think it's all relative to how well informed the player is and how well you inform him... certainly he passes by the statue of Oscar while outside Fifth Third... and he has to see him number retired on the wall... play it as a past/present type deal... Oscar is where the program came from, Kenyon is where it is in the present day...

Except Kenyon was introduced with his hs affiliation not with UC. Maybe he has simmered a little bit now.

I believe I read somewhere that last year the Big O hosted several recruits...as in he sat with them, ate with them, and talked to them while the game was going on. (Because the coaches couldnt)

IMO the less Big O is involved with the athletic department, the better off we are.

kids today don't care about Oscar Robinson. They care about Derrick Rose and Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony- guys who got into college and got into the league quickly. Im not saying they wouldn't appreciate meeting Oscar, but seeing as how they probably have no idea what he looks like, may not have even heard of him (depending), and were born 30 years after he played for UC, I just don't view him being a huge selling factor to kids in recruiting.

He cannot be involved with recruiting or UC will get hit with violation.

Dumb rule but it's the rule.

Only coaches, UC staff, and players can be involved with recruiting.

Not Oscar, not K-mart, not any ex-players.

Hope not. UC committed NCAA recruiting violations if true.

I dont know if he 'hosted' them per say but I do believe that the paper said he was with them at some point. Maybe I misread it and he was with people looking to donate...but I dont think so...

He may "bump" them - meaning Meet Them "Accidentally" but he can't host them.

I wish Corrie Blount wouldn't have messed up. He would have been great to have on staff. He played a lot of years in the NBA and always seemed like a good character guy until recently. Sad really sad.

The best recruiting tool bar none is winning. If we can win they will come..

Lebron is totally different than most if not all of the young guys today, he
gets it. He understands that with no Big O, MJ, Magic, Bird, and even guys
before then, that he doesn't get the big $$$. Not only that though, he
understands what they meant to the history of basketball. Most of the other
young punks probably don't even know of the Big O.

He was the Interim coach for a couple of months, maybe he still holds a position with the athletic dept.

True dat but it doesn't matter. Oscar is considered "representative of UC;s interests" and cannot be directly involved in recruiting.

IF he were a coach, then he could.
