I'll post game updates here. Right now, it's:

UC - 3
Oregon State - 0

UC gets a 37 yard FG following a pick by the defense

So far, both defenses are playing well. Neither team has found much of a flow offensively.

Elsewhere in the Big East, Louisville leads Middle Tennesse State 28 - 21...in the FIRST QUARTER. The defenses are completely absent in this game.

Louisville has 282 yards, Middle Tennesse State has 212.

Bearcat offensive line having a lot of trouble keeping Ben Mauk on his feet. Oregon State D-line is controlling the line of scrimmage.

Bearcat defense playing very well. They are well schemed to stop the run, forcing the Beavers to pass. Then, on pass plays, the Bearcat LBs and DBs are flying to the ball making plays.

Good punt by Oregon State has UC pinned against their goal line.

End of 1st quarter:
Bearcats - 3
Beavers - 0

Bearcat defense yields very little after nice Oregon State punt return. Beaver FG attempt is just wide right. 12:28 to go in the 1st half. Score is still 3 - 0.

Bearcats defense bends but does not break on Oregon State's best drive of the night. Oregon State makes the 31 yard FG. Score is now:

Bearcats - 3
Beavers - 3
6:00 to go in the 1st half.

Middle Tennessee State - 35
Halftime
The total lack of defense in this game is ridiculous

Louisville has 409 yards
Middle Tennessee State has 352

Pressure on Beaver QB results in errant throw that is picked off by the C. Smith. Interception return is all the way back to the Beaver 31. 1st down pass complete down to the Beaver 20.

Mauk to Barnett on nice fade pattern. TOUCHDOWN BEARCATS!!
PAT is good.

Bearcats - 10
Beavers - 3
1:15 to go in the first half

That's how to cash in on a turnover!

Nice! Especially after that incredible self-destruction starting at the OSU 24 yd. line...oh well, sometimes luck trumps all...I'll take it!

nice 3 and out to follow

Defense holds to the Beavers to a three and out on their drive following the TD. Offense still not able to get things going. The penalties are not helping the cause. Case in point: holding just negated a nice scramble and first down pass by Mauk. On 3rd and 14, defensive pass interference is going to give the Bearcats a first down.

These penalties are starting to get old

Their penalties sure help though

ESPN announcers just spoke with Rick Minter who is down on the sidelines watching the game. Rick was very gracious in his comments. Rick reiterated the struggles UC will have building a solid fan base in Cincinnati. Performances like tonight (so far...don't want to jinx it) can only help.

Mauk's untimely fumbles on shotguns snaps are creating too many 3rd and long situations. The last one takes the Bearcats out of FG range.

Rogers is going to try the 55 yard FG. AND IT IS GOOD!!!!!! WOW!!!!!

Bearcats 20
Beavers 3

That is a BIG score...it is now a three score game!

Another three and out for the Bearcat D. Special teams comes up HUGE again. Punt is blocked...recovered in the endzone for the BEARCATS TOUCHDOWN!!!
PAT is good.

Bearcats 27
Beavers 3
2:13 to go in the 3rd quarter

The Bearcats D is playing a very fast and physical game tonight. I am really impressed so far with their pursuit speed and their solid and physical tackling. I think most of us knew that the Bearcats D would be a strength this season. It certainly is showing tonight. But, the game is 4 quarters long, not 3 so I want to see the D finish this game strong.

Louisville is leading Middle Tennessee State 51 - 42.
Louisville's defense is giving up "huge chucks of land" (to borrow a phrase from the Monty Python). I cannot see Louisville being able to survive like this against better teams.

Interception initially ruled out of bounds is reversed. Bearcat ball near midfield. 0:56 left in the 3rd quarter.

Beautiful play action roll out by Mauk. Moore streaks down the sidelines WIDE OPEN (no one within 10 yards). Moore makes the catch and goes in untouched for the BEARCATS TOUCHDOWN!!!
PAT is good.

Bearcats 34
Beavers 3
0:11 left in the 3rd quarter

Beavers have changed their QB. End of the 3rd quarter. Need to finish STRONG!!! Don't let up even with the big lead.

Nakamura gets the pick after the tipped ball by another DeAngelo Smith. Nice way to close down what looked like a promising Beaver drive after the Beaver QB switch. Penalty on the return negates most of the nice return. But, on three straight running plays, the Bearcats get a 1st down. It is now time to run the ball and run some time off of the clock. No point in taking any chances on offense now.

DeAngelo Smith makes a pick but fumbles the ball on the return. Oregon State gets the ball back at the Bearcat 43. That'll at least slow down the Beavers a bit.

That is the 5th pick thrown by Beaver QBs tonight.

Louisville is going to win but it certainly was not pretty for their defense against a team not really known as a power (certainly not an offensive power).

Consider these stats:
Louisville's defense gives up:
268 yards rushing (9.2 yards per rushing attempt)
559 yards total (10 yards per play)

All of Louisville's future opponents are going to study this film very hard.

4:54 to go. Bearcat ball. Time for a heavy dose of mastodon ball to run time off of the clock.

A very good performance and a very good win for the Bearcats. But, one win does not a season make. Celebrate the victory tonight, forget about it tomorrow and get on with the task of keeping the Victory Bell. Bring on the Redhawks.

I thought his comments were borderline gracious. There were good things, but he didn't help us by harping on what a tough sell UC fb is in this town. He wants to be upbeat for us, but he also has to justify his own regime. By talking about how tough it is here he can excuse his own failures. I'd rather not see him on camera.

He seemed gracious to me. He was just stating the facts. Same with his comments about Notre Dame. I assume he wants another job. He can't shoot his mouth off. :)

I'm a big fan of Rick Minter... I thought he did a good job here. When he was at UC it was an absolutely brutal job. Conference USA was a tough sell, especially in Cincinnati. He took us to multiple bowls and had an eye for talent. I wish him nothing but the best, and could not be more thrilled about having Brian Kelly
