If you haven't seen this they are not allowing standing in the concourses.

Can someone help me with what the definition of a concorse is? We always stand behind the student section in front of Dieterly (building formerly known as Schmidlap). Is this going to be taken away?

By the way....Marshall returned around 700 of their alloted tickets from the 3,000 they requested. Many had spoken about how many Marshall fans would be at the game.

here is the story and I love to hear it.

I think they are trying to discourage people from just loitering around anywhere but in their seats unless they are in line for concessions. I'm not sure this can be harshly enforced, but I don't think it hurts to give people the message that "hey, take your seat and watch the game. Don't just hang around outside the bowl, missing the action and clogging up the works for people heading to the restroom or to buy a soda."

To answer your question, I would call "concourse" anywhere from one end of the horseshoe to the other, at the top row level of the main bowl, as well as the walkway along the North stands.

That's kind of depressing. I have many fond memories of loitering around the horseshoe area where Simpson described aka "the young alumni" section.

Shawn,

The Thundering Herd board has a couple of threads stating this was their second batch of tix. Sold through the first 5K. My guess is that we end up with about 32,000 in attendance. About 8,500 in the corners of Shank Pavillion will be wearing green. God they are an obnoxious fan base.

I hope we can get the stadium close to full. I hope they bring more than 3K with them. I don't think it will change the outcome.

When did this happen? Why the name change?

It has been since they made it part of the vocal arts center in the mid to late 90s.

I was just at the athletic ticket office purchasing 3 student guest tickets (one of the few advantages of working full time and going to school full time - cheap tickets! I can bring my whole family to the game for $15). They are telling people that the game is close to a sell out.

After debating this with Marshall fans and getting info from various sources, it appears their estimate of up to 10,000 Marshall fans is not even close.

From BCI -

Here are the official numbers of tickets sent to the Marshall ticket office.

Marshall received 400 complimentary tickets for players' familes, band, etc.

The total consignment was 3,000 tickets.

Marshall sold 1,800 of that 3,000 and kept another 500 tickets to sell this week.

The University returned 700 tickets to UC this week.

Since Marshall didn't come close to selling its original allotment of 3,000 tickets, it's doubtful many Marhsall fans bought tickets from UC's ticket office. It looks like the estimate of 10,000 Herd fans attending Saturday night's game is grossly exaggerated.

Amen to that!!! My best Nippert memories have come while "loitering" with the hard core Nippert fans, never sitting once. The beer. the comroderie, and the "view" have made for many a fun night at Nippert. We'll see how strictly this is enforced b/c I know there will be resistance in our our little corner of Nippert. Lifelong, hardcore Bearcat football fans like us have been keeping your seats on the bandwadon warm over the years.:cool:

Dieterle is a big arts contributor in the Cincinnati area and a Chi Omega

The building also used to be the men's campus gymnasium, hence it's location in relation to Nippert

I think it would be benificial for UC to look into the possibility of breaking through the back walls (East side) of the concession stands, and opening them up to the outside of the stadium (between The Nip and Tangeman). The concourses are ridiculously tight to begin with (even w/o huge crowds) and having concession lines that span the width of the concourse is a huge issue (espeically at halftime). I dont think there would be many structural/logistical issues w/ doing this, as I believe the back wall is only cinder block covered by brick.

Good luck, Joe. Fight the man. However, this has been long overdue. One of the complaints about that side of the stadiuim is that many fans can't get out of their section to hit concessions or bathrooms without having to fight through the crowd standing around spilling beer on their shoes. I'm sure you have fun, but its annoying to folks trying to navigate the stadium to get to or from their seats. Try doing it with a family. Its a blast during a crowded game (note sarcasm).

I don't think the area in front of Diertle is backing up traffic. they can limit people from not standing on the steps, but the area up there is out of the way.

I absolutely agree. Plus, it makes for an easier getaway to the Catskellar for halftime refreshments and score updates on other games.

Joe, your support is appreciated, but for the few people that can actually do that, there are lots more of us who have been "keeping the bandwagon seats warm" right from our seats. Maybe you should be able to buy Dieterly standing tickets so someone else can buy and sit in the seats you are leaving empty. Personally, I've got no problem with you standing down there as long as your not clogging up any throughways. But I also don't have a problem with the university trying to get people to take their seats unless they have somewhere to go.

To make another point - what you've been doing for years is a side effect of the disease we've been suffering - low attendance. We can't have it both ways. If we want to play in the big sandbox, and fill The Nip every week, some old habits might have to die. Fans in Austin, Columbus, and Happy Valley don't get to leisurly stand around the end of their stadium, sipping on their suds, a few yards away from the action on the field. It's not a bad thing, man. Enjoy the revolution!

Has anybody seen Brian Kelly's convocation address to the Freshman, they(students) seemed pretty excited. 4100+ freshman in this class, the largest in history at UC. Expect a huge student turnout Saturday! Go Bearcats!

Apparently there is. I see more people in Red/Grey/White than there should be. ****, theres even students who wear like blue or green to games. I don't understand it, but oh well I guess. Some folks just like to be stubborn.

I thought Come Early meant 'get in your seat more than 1 minute before kickoff - preferably about 20 minutes before kickoff - in time to see the band come down the steps and do their thing, then have a packed house give the team a welcome onto the field. But I suppose both explanations will work.

In the student section I've seen a heck of a lot of Bengals jerseys at the home games thus far, maybe they'll begin to sort out their confusion about which day which team is playing here soon...

Semi understandable if it was during the Oregon State game and they were sucking up in case they met Chad or T.J.

I think the freshmen will have a big impact on the student section this year, and in this class will go a long way to improving the student situation here. This is the first time UC has given freshmen a reason to stop rooting for their "hometown" teams, and get excited about Bearcat football. My freshman year, there were people who stayed in their dorms during a UC game to watch OSU/Mich/Tennessee/what have you. I think BK has been very vocal about getting students excited for games, and this class of students will likely be the linchpin for future students expectations.

I Get Goosebumps Thinking Of Sell Out For Marshall-- If The Students Come-- As They Should There Will Be At Least 34,000. It Will Be Tough To Maneuver. Now That The Football Team Has Stepped Up-- Now The Band Has To Show They Are A Top 30 Band. If You Want To Keep People In Their Seats-- Let The Beer Vendors Deliver In The Aisles. Give The Students A Discount On The Concessions (including Beer For The First Quarter). Nippert Could Be The Wrigley Field Of College Football, Or Maybe Bk Would Say The Fenway Park.
The Place Will Rock The Rest Of The Year--go Cats

Come EARLY( MEANS LOITERING IN THE TAILGATE AREAS, be LOUD (means yelling and cheering while watching the game from your seat) and wear BLACK (no explanation required)

While we are expecting a big crowd, it is important that everyone follow the lead that our head coach has asked of all BEARCAT NATION this season - which is to...

COME EARLY, which means get in your seats by 7 p.m. and help make Nippert Stadium a LOUD home environment for the Bearcats. All pregame areas adjacent to the venue will close at 7 p.m. to help our fans into the stadium in a timely manner. If you are tailgating please start packing up around 7 p.m. to allow yourself time to get through the gates and into your seats. If you have ever been to a game at Virginia Tech, LSU, or Nebraska (Sea of Red) you can understand what we are going for here. Filing in at the 8 minute mark of the first quarter is not what we need to create a great environment for championship football.

BE LOUD, pretty simple here - cheer loud often and early - we cannot emphisize how important it is for the team to see a big crowd in the stadium before the game, especially at the 20 minute countdown mark, which will be at 7:15 p.m. this week.

WEAR BLACK, the easiest of the three requests - Black is our color of choice because it is intimidating, it is the color of our home uniforms, and because four other division one schools and a major league baseball team have RED as their identity. Why be included in this group is we can set our own path.

Again, thanks for all of the support -

Give The Students A Discount On The Concessions (including Beer For The First Quarter).

Considering that a pretty high percentage of the undergrads are not old enough to legally buy beer, I think offering students a discount on beer would be sending a pretty questionable message.

Heck, a lot of college campuses don't allow beer sales at all.

TO BE SURE THAT THERE ARE NO QUESTIONABLE MESSAGES--ALL CONCESSIONS COULD BE DISCOUNTED $1.00 FOR ALL FOR THE FIRST QUARTER. $6 BUCKS FOR A BEER AND $3 FOR A POP IS A RIP. I CAN LIVE WITHOUT EITHER BUT IT IS A SHAME TO SEE 400 STUDENTS GO TO GAME ROOM TO BUY $2 BEERS. WHEN YOU GO TO ANY MAJOR GOLF TOURNATMT
BEER IS SOLD FOR LESS THAN $3. MAKE IT REASONABLE FOR ALL.

I also think its dumb that students can't use their Bearcat Cards to buy concessions at games. I know it takes longer than cash, but its about the same as a CC, and if they would designate a few concession stands as student only, or only set it up for 2 or 3 booths, there would be no problems implementing a decent policy regarding it...

well I haven't bought anything at a game in like 3 years, so I didn't know that, but I think it would make sense to at least have 2 or 3 stands that had that capability, just to get into the 21st century a little bit

Although I tend to agree that "loitering" in the the large concourse area behind the endzone (student section) is a tradition and it will be a disappointment if it is stopped, I am glad that they are doing what they can to limit standing in the narrow walkway between the endzone and the press box area. That is like the gauntlet on gameday, especially when you've been drinking all morning. :)
