Great free BCL article interviewing Cincinnati strength and conditioning coach Dave Andrews on the progress the Bearcats have made in the weight room. Also shows how they match up against some NBA players. Definitely a must read!

Some interesting tidbits I saw....

Yancy Gates did 25 reps @185 and Steven Toyloy did 30. Some NBA numbers, Dejuan Blair only did 18 and Blake Griffin did 22. Toyloy's number would put him in the top 5 bench of all time. Also both Gates and Toyloy's vertical was measured at 36 inches, Dwight Howard's and Blake Griffin's were 35.5 and 35 inches respectively. That's absolutely insane! Gates and Toyloy are going to be a load this season!

Darnell Wilks and Dion Dixon had 42 and 40 inch verticals, the highest on the team.

Not sure if these NBA stats are from when they were tested as rookies or current ones, still impressive though.

Wow.

Although, 25-30 reps at 185lbs isn't very impressive for men that are 260lbs+. However, I must remind myself that these gentlemen are 6'8'' or taller and aren't trying to gain "football strength." Either way, I'm glad to see that these young men are making progress and will be in tip-top shape for the start of the season.

^ Also, they more than likely have longer arms than an average football player and thus have to move the weight further each time to complete a rep.

^ That was implied with the "height" comment.

I can push 20+ reps at that weight, but I'm not 6'8". Arm length is definately a big, big factor in the bench press.

Yeah I was about to say 18 wasn't that impressive for DeJuan Blair but then I remembered how long his windspan was.

The fact that basketball uses a 185 pound bench press test is pretty embarrassing. Up it to 225.

The longer the arms...the longer the muscles to lift the weight with.

Maybe Wilks can jump off the bench and onto the court :D

Does Toyloy have any future in the NBA? I know his scoring lacks but his defensive seems to be above average.

I dont think it is limited to that, he is also limited height wise. To be 6'8" in the NBA with little to no offense game you have to be Ben Wallace good on defense.

exactly...hence why you see a lot more "jacked" 5'6" people than jacked 6'5" people.

The weight training is great, but, I'm more concerned with whether or not any of these guys can make free throws, block out and rebound, dribble and pass the ball, set a screen, shoot a decent field goal pct., or play defense.

If you don't have the size and the strength in the Big East, then being able to block out and rebound are a moot point in the paint. Agree with the rest of it though.

That, and 5'6 guys often have a Napolean complex, and live in the gym to compensate for their lack of height. I do get the leverage thing, though.

It is hard to believe that Dwight Howard, who looks like he could knock down a house, could bench press 185 only 7 times. I think I could still do that, and I'm an old, skinny-fat guy.

Dwight Howard has done a serious transformation to his body since he was drafted. Those were his numbers at the pre-draft camp. No way he is only 7 reps now...

Is Dave Andrews regarded as one of the better S&C coaches out there?

^ I know two seasons ago the announcers made a big deal about Dwight Howard finally benching 300lbs+. "Supposedly" there are youtube videos or videos on a website that show Dwight benching 400lbs.

Dwight Howard is a beast. He is definately strong.

...so bostic has really let himself go since his playing days, huh?

these coaches prolly foam at the mouth when they see guys with frames like toyloy and gates stepping into the weight room.

Easy answer....no.
