Daugherty----Wrong Again

I am never a proponent of reading Paul Daugherty, but this time is a must. Make sure to pay particular attention to "Tim Murphy got them to the Humanitarian Bowl". WRONG!!!!

Tim Murphy won 8 games and 5 in a row and was shut out of any bowl games which probably helped his decision to leave for Harvard (in addition to his mother on the East coast being very ill).

Rick Minter got them and won the Humanitarian Bowl by putting junior QB Chad Plummer at WR and promoting freshman Deontey Kenner to QB.

I wrote this email to PD earlier this morning:

Paul,

Maybe you should fact check before writing stuff about UC. Great, it
was a positive article about UC, but it had less facts in it than
Jenni Carlson's column in the Daily Oklahoman that pissed off Mike
Gundy. Seriously, Minter was in his 4th year at UC when they went to
the Humanitarian Bowl, Tim Murphy's 1st recruiting class at Harvard
were in their senior year! John Arena's senior year was 1991, but the
Humanitarian Bowl was in 1997! The year after Arena graduated UC was
in the bowl game?!? What? Where did he come from with this info? Where
is the editor for the Enquirer checking facts?

This has to be the worst articles for facts I've ever seen from you,
Doc. I can't imagine that the Enquirer has had many articles over the
years with more inaccuracies than this article.

Guys a little advice when writing a newspaper writer. Correct them if the have wrong facts. It shouldn't happen but it does.
Don't beat 'em up for it, because if he gets a ton of grief... he may think it isn't wort while to bring the topic up again.

If I could keep Daugherty from writing about the Bearcats, I would feel like I really accomplished something.

He did in fact tell me to keep my jabs to myself in a one line e-mail (in addition to informing me about the retraction being printed tomorrow.)

PD can sometimes be a first class jerk. If you think his reply to you was inappropriate, I suggest you forward it to the sports editor at the Enquirer.

Maybe Paul should get a radio program and we could call him and voice our concerns. Wait, they tried that. As bad as he is at writing, he shouldn't quit his day job.

I tried to give the guy a break and accept that he was being tongue in cheek, but the article made me sad. It is apparant he does not like college football.

A couple of weeks ago, I responded to an article written by a Houston Chronicle sportswriter regarding June Jones, the head coach of Hawaii. The writer was spewing praises and accolades about Jones' program.

I mentioned that he neglected to include the fact that Jones' program was probably the dirtiest in college football. They had the most on-field fights and incidents. They had the most late hits. They abused opposing fans and players. Worse still.......Jones encourages it. It also doesn't help that they have "home grown" officials who tolerate this crap and rarely call a penalty for it.

The writer's response to me was "I've known June for twenty years. I really like him." I've corrected the spelling from the sportswriter.....but you get the drift.

These guys have an agenda and they'll stick with it.

I had a very different experience when I wrote to doc a few yrs ago to voice my disagreement with an article he wrote. His response was very civil. I suspect the tone of his response is related to the tone of the letter he gets.

I don't have a problem with what he says. His job is to sell newspapers and I think he does a decent job at that. I try not to classify someon on if I agree with them or not. Maybe everyone should try growing up and stop worrying about a mistake a columnist wrote in the paper. It's not the end of the world. Everyone feels like he disrespected the program because he wrote something that was untrue. I'm sure it was a mistake and not intended to be a slap in UC's face. Calm down.

Well said. Also remember that Mr Daugherty's column exists to sell papers and generate interest, and controversy is a tried and true method of gaining exposure (see also: Barber, Tiki; Betis, Jerome, and every other sportscaster on TV)

I caught that to while reading the paper at work. If it was one little mistake yeah, I can live with it. But these constant, little petty mistakes, as if they couldn't be bothered to research facts, are ridiculous. Then when a guy like Daughtery looks at it as "Well at least I'm getting pub" instead of looking at it as a major screw up from a supposed reputable reporter it makes it worse.

Which would make him a bad reporter if he stops covering something because a major mistake of his is pointed out. Someone in the thread said he sent an e-mail back saying keep the jabs to yourself. I find that hilarious and hypocritical since he constantly takes jabs at other people. I guess those who live in glass houses.

First of all I'm a grown man, so you don't have to tell me to grow up. Second, this is just one mistake after another from a newspaper that has thumbed its nose at the university. This mistake though was off-the-charts pathetic. You can tell people to grow up and calm down, but this is ridiculous. This is like him writing an article about Maurice Clarett and saying "the former star tailback for Ohio State's 1996 national championship team". I mean that is a major error that reflects badly on you. As for the person who said that the tone of his response probably reflects the tone of the mail he gets, clearly doesn't listen to him the radio going back years. Because Daugherty's tone has always been that he is above everyone. His first meeting with Kelly he was sniping with Kelly before Kelly even said anything to him, and talking down to Kelly. Kelly's response, while civil, was along the lines of "Sorry Daugherty, there's a new sheriff in town." Daugherty's next column was full of swipe and potshots at Brian Kelly. The same happened when he tried to talk down to Bob Huggins so this isn't some innocent guy who is suddenly getting beaten up.

RESEARCHING WHAT THEY WRITE IS THEIR JOB! I don't know how people can accept the constant inaccuracies that go on at the paper. It happens way too often at the newspapers any more, and personally I am tired of it. There used to be 3 people that articles went through to verify the validity of the story. Now it appears nobody outside of the writer is verifying any data in the story... the media in this country has gone down hill very quickly, especially over the past decade.
