Apparently he tore his achilles, or something to that effect and will miss the season. If true this is really terrible news and unfortunate for Mike. Is it me or does it seem UC can never catch the breaks?
Question, I would assume that he can still redshirt this year even though he had to sit out a year as a transfer?
I really thought he would be the difference maker going into this season.

This is horrible news if indeed true. He would have given us an experienced low post presence this year. I would assume he could apply for a medical redshirt, although if he does, then someone would have to leave the program for '09 as Williams scholly was going to be passed to McElroy.
If this is the case, I could see Mick going big across the front line w/McClain and Adam H. on the floor at the same time. Also gives more playing time to a guy like Belton.

Well, I think we'll see more Sikes and Williamson (and some Belton) playing the 4 PF spot. Crapola.

This is dreadful news. Anyone who saw Mike this summer could see he was our best player, and I don't think he can be replaced. He was a true power player, the genuine article -- a rebounder and scorer inside. Everyone is devastated.

Not definite yet. Everyone cross your fingers and hope it's a minor strain of some sort.

It's definite enough: a torn achilles that ends his season. It's been confirmed by several sources.

A torn Achilles is not something that you come back from in just a year for athletes. This could be really bad. Fortunately, he's young and may recuperate faster than most.

Really bad news, but the silver lining is with a full recovery (fingers crossed), he has 2 years of eligbility left and so we'd have him not only for 08-09, but also 09-10 (but he'll be able to graduate by then so maybe he;ll be tired of hoops and not wanna play)

I feel really bad for him especially. He's been very patient, and I'm sure has worked hard and ready to showcase his talent. Tough break.
This is horrible news for Mike. Although the concerns for the team are justified, our concerns for Mike should take precident. As a parent of a kid who had to go through this situation, I can tell you he will need a lot of support just to stay around school for another year, what yet play basketball again. He needs to get his education while he has the opportunity, and hope that he can compete at a high level again.
I wish you luck Mike.

Sikes will play the PF with Williamson backing or viceversa, Does any body know how Williamsons knee is? Did he get it repaired? Will AdamH move over with McClain at center? I think we will be fine how cause Mick has that Belton guy. it would have been nice too have Williams, for Christ out loud>

What exactly did Jesus have to do with this?
Anyway, this is tough news. Almost like UC can't get a break. From NCAA crapping on them to untimely injuries. Not that there are any positives to take from this but at least this happened early enough that they can define themselves without Mike.
What a shame.

Ouch! Why does this have to happen to UC again this year? UC has been through a number of unfortunate incidents since K-Mart broke his leg in 2000. I wish it happened to the 3rd-string walkon forward player.

The NCAA would need to extend William's eligibility window to six years for him
to play in 09-10. That waiver is not a rubber stamped certainty and in fact it probably will not apply to circumstances in this case.

Ask Ben Mauk about it not being rubber stamped. He is also going to be applying for a 6th year, but it is 50/50 at best. NCAA does not like to give this 6th year.

Gregg Doyel said it would be the first time ever for a guy to get a 6th year without it being 2 medical redshirts. The chances of the NCAA breaking new, positive, ground with UC is pretty much none.

I bleed red and black, Unlike all you nay sayers, With Mike Williams,I wanted to win the BE (CHRIST IS CRYING) without Williams you guys are right 8-8-10-6

Just because some don't think the team won't win the Big East does not mean that they are not just as loyal to UC as anyone else.
Put me on record as saying this team will be 13th in the BE. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't feel good now that they lost Williams. He was easily the best player on the team from what I've been told by multiple people who saw him during the summer.
Oh well, I guess there is always next year.
First off, godspeed on your recovery Mike. Hang tough.
I still think they'll be much improved over last season. They lost very little, and added some nice depth. The guys who return are experienced now. I still think they'll be over .500 and make the BE tourney, which was my expectation before this happened.

I hope it is not true. This would be a huge blow for this year's basketball team. I hope he can get a medical redshirt year if it is true.

Per Josh's blog
"Our entire team feels for Mike today. This is a very unfortunate injury due to the fact that Mike will miss his second consecutive season. Mike is the hardest working guy in our program and will recover from this at full strength because of his positive attitude. I also feel bad for our fans because I know they were looking forward to watching Mike play this year. We will miss not having him in the line-up, but our guys remain very excited about getting ready for the season and building our program back to national prominence."
Also in the release, it says Williams will receive his medical redshirt and will still have two years of eligibility.

Included in article:
"He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining."
I don't know why, but it seems like a done deal that he will get a med redshirt. My guess is that it has something to do with academic standing and a reward for his hard work off the court.

so did he get the medical redshirt then? i read it over on Josh's blog, so I am assuming it is legit.

We can hope that it is as cut and dry as that makes it sound. But unless there has been a change in the NCAA rules; Mike will need the a sixth year on the eligibility time frame in order to get in his four years of playing time . Normally you can't even apply for that until your original 5 year period expires. I think UC is just expressing what they hope the end result of the process will be.

Apparently it's a ruptured achilles tendon, not a knee - he's still out for the season - I don't know if that kind of injury is worse than a knee, or tends to heal more easily...anyone out there know?

Typically worse and harder to come back from. Achilles is a really bad injury. I'll be happy if he can play next year.

I would look for Williamson at PF to start the season. We will once again be undermanned inside. It would be nice to land Gilchrist (sp?) who would be eligible to play this season since he was released from his Virginia Tech scholly.

Well I guess he is listed as an '08 recruit. Augustus Gilchrist nice size and rated top 20 at his position. I thought he was eligible to play the second half of this season but maybe I was wrong. He was released from his LOI to V.T. so he would have had to sign for the '07 season correct?

I believe that was a mistake on Yahoo's part, or whoever wrote it. M. Wililams will have to apply for a 6th year at the end of his eligibility. It is unlikely that he will receive it based on 1) typically only a 6th year is given for two years of medical redshirts and 2) our compliance office does not have a good track record.

But there is a new administration at UC, both at the top and in the athletic office, new coaches, new everybody, AND we are now in a BCS conference (which generate all the money for the NCAA). I'm not holding out much hope for a 6th year for Williams, because of #1, however it's time we get beyond #2.

I hope for Mike's and UC's sake we can have him in 08' and 09'. If so I think the 09' season still looks like "The One" in which UC returns to glory. I had 07' and 08' as rebuilding anyway and 09' as our first legitimate chance to contend. If we can add Williams to that roster it will be even better than expected.

Williams...Senior (if)

McClain...Junior

Not that I want to exclude a few others like Wright and Wilks and the rest but those 5 would be tough on paper wouldn't they? Good luck Mike! Tough break. Stay positive Bearcats!

Doyel is wrong. It's happened before. Evan Eschmeyer (7-footer) at Northwestern is one example.

Typically 12-18 month recovery.
Former Bengal Takeo Spikes was back on the field slightly less than a year after suffering the same injury. Hopefully Mike can rehab as quickly.

Maybe but Achilles injury is tougher than ACL (knee) injury.
Tamika Catchings tore her Achilles this summer and is not expected back until next summer at the very earliest. She may miss the entire WNBA season in 2008.
Difficult recovery for athletes.
