Only other offers were to a Mac school and Oh. Valley scool..Kent St and Eastern Ill. with a 1 star scout 2 star rival rating. Coming as a walkon or are we giving a scholorship?

Really hope he is a preferred walk on. If we get him, miliano, and lloyd all as walk ons I think CJ is doing a marvelous job with not only those local players but also the scholarship guys as well.

Dyer didn't specify but Subflea posted in another forum that Milano is walking on. Another poster mentioned that Lloyd is on a partial Baseball and academic scholarship financial package. i don't know about Brown but i am guessing he'll be walking on as well.

Prefered walk on. A great get as a non-scholarship player. I think you may see him earn one in a couple of years.

others, not on BCN but elsewhere, have commented on him being better than his ranking. Any clue as to why he's rated so poorly but Scout and Rivals (not that they are the end all be all of anything?).

Perfect. You have to love bring quality local kids as preferred walk-ons.

Not sure this is the case with him, but there are so many kids to evaluate that a kid may get evaluated in his junior year and his growth his senior year is not noticed.
Take Dominique Brown. Begining of the year he wasn't a top 50 ohio kid. If he didn't get the offers and looks from osu and schools with larger subscription bases then would he have gotten up to a 4 star?
Some complain (me included) that kids get higher ratings when a school like osu offers. I think it is just as much that they get more or different eyes on him when he gets that offer and it can equate to a higer ranking.

Elder kids are usually tough and dedicated. One thing about Mays is he is listed as a 6'3" OLB. I think our LB's have been undersized, and not just weight wise but in height. Nice to have height for extra leverage.

i agree with just about everything you've said. Actually D.Brown is the other guy that gets cited for being underranked in this class. Some feel that he was should have been OH POY/Mr. Football. in any case i'm hoping that the Bearcats benefit from the lack of attention to Corey Mason. By all accounts, ppl who have been following Elder say he's vastly underrated. i look forward to hopefully continuing the Elder pipeline. Jake Lindsey, LB 2010, should be a guy that gets some looks by the coaching staff from what i've heard.

The height is especially intriguing with him. I love what seems to be an aggressive approach in recruiting local kids as preferred walk-ons, especially those good enough to get offers from MAC schools. It's huge for our depth.

I don't think they can give him a baseball scholarship. I am pretty sure the rule is that whatever sport you recieve a scholarship for must be the sport you play first in an academic year.
They were looking into bringing one of the baseball players onto the football team this year as a scout team player, but they couldn't do it because they would have had to have given him a football scholarship since it is played in the fall and baseball isn't till the spring.

Seems strange, what if you were a great baseball player who happened to be pretty good at football. A rule like that would bassically. Be saying, "football players can do whatever but who carees about the rest of you all"

Is "preferred walk-on" an actual status (like scholarship, redshirt, etc) or is it verbalized by the coach that you will get priority treatment when it comes to determining who gets scholarships? I only started hearing of them in the past year or two. We seem to be getting a lot of preferred walk-ons this year.

A preferred walk-on is someone who is fully a member of the team, except they don't have one of the 85 scholarships available. This is oppose to a regular walk-on, who has to try out in fall camp or during the spring.
It's a low risk way of bringing in guys with potential. If they pan out, give him a scholarship. If not, you didn't burn one of the 85 on him for 4 or 5 years.

Preferred walk on means that you don't have to try out, but you are not getting a scholarship.

So when I read the kid's bio on gobearcats, will it say he was a walk-on in 2010 or a preferred walk-on in 2010? Sorry - just curious. Don't mean to keep asking questions. Just want to know if it is just a term used by coaches or if it is an official one.

I think it is just a term used by coaches. Sort of like a verbal commitment. As we all know that is about worthless.

So its really a silent verbal? ;)
