That said you personal info had been lost/stolen? I graduated 10 years ago. Why is my info on a freaking thumb drive?

Are you sure your information was lost on the thumb drive? I think most of the older students information that was lost was due to paper files being improperly destroyed before selling some old filing cabinets. The thumb drive info was college specific (I can't remember which college though).

i got one of those letters too. my letter said it was a thumb drive that was stolen as well... so annoying. i'm very careful as to how i use my info and then my dumbass alma mater goes and leaves me vulnerable. i just contacted my credit bureau, not much else i can do.

why in the **** does UC use you're social security number as your student ID??? I assumed this was common practice, but it seems so stupid. I'm supposed to keep my SS card in a safe place, but i plaster the number all over every test i ever took at college. dumb.

Starting last year, UC gave you an M0..... number to each student, instead of your social. I always hated putting my SS number on papers because who knows who else could see it.

nice to know they finally got around to giving people actual student ID numbers.

Per Greg Hand, if you were not in UCOL you're data is not in danger. He stated this to me in an email in reply to some questions I asked him.

UCOL? What might that stand for. I have a feeling I am about to feel stupid.

My information was in the filing cabinets according to an email I received. They said the cabinet was full of copies of student insurance cards which in most cases contained Social Security numbers or your parents Social Security numbers if you were on your parents insurance.

I was never a part of University College so I guess that part was specific to the thumb drive.
