View Full Version : NKU Game

Is there any interest in talking about tonight's game? I know it's only an exhibition game. Only NKU. etc, etc.... But I am curious about what you are hoping to see tonight. Count me among those that will not be attending (young children and trick-or-treating trumping the game), however I would like to think those attending would see glimpses of the following...

- Evidence that Vaughn has improved his ball handling ability in the offseason. I think this guy could be "gold" late in a game due to his ability to make a free throw. However, last year he did not handle the ball well enough to be trusted in close-game situations.

- Evidence that Williamson's knee will not be a problem this year. (Is this wishful thinking?)

- A glimpse of good play from the Center position

- An un-selfish approach to executing the offense. I don't expect to see crisp execution of the offense...although I would like to see guys looking to pass for the good shot.

- Signs that the pressure-style defense will be a factor this season....I would think depth alone would make this a possibility.

Anyone else with wish lists?

I will be in attendance as long as my brother lets me use his Student I.D. If not I might be at the MSJ game. Here are my top 3 things I would like to see from the Cats

1. Gentry & Warren play like we all know they can. They were getting use to the BE last year and this year it is time for them to break out and play like they have proved they can. They just need to gain some consistency and it would be good to start with the first exhibition game.
2. I would love to see the press because I think that might be our most valuable asset as a team.
3. Want to see McClain be agressive and rip down 8 boards. I dont care about the points. I want 8-12 good boards. 3 or so being offensive. I really wouldnt mind him fouling out either. Basically I want him to be aggresive.

I want to see Alvin Mitchell get into the flow, and knock down some shots.

I would also like to see John W be healthy with those knees. He's important to our offense and rebounding, we need him.

Deonta will be fine.. but can Marv and Jamual be consistent with ball-handling and defending?

The Polish Master.. can he rebound? Knock down open shots?

Finally, I want to see how Rashad fits in. It seems to me he's most ready out of the freshmen to crack the starting line-up first. I figure it will be Deonta, Marv, Rashad, John W, and the Polish Master... with Al 6th man, Marcus and McClain first bigs off bench (although Marcus is soft).. with Larry and Jamual the backup guards.. and Darnell in at the end for huge reverse slams.

I will be there, but unlike the rest in this forum, I'm not really looking for anything in particular. Playing against NKU will give hardly any indication as to what anyone can do against the UConns, G-towns, and WVs of the world. What I'll be keeping an eye out for is what I don't want to see. Things like our new centers (or anyone) playing weak, letting NKU do ANYTHING offensively, and not just totally dominating. It can be easy to slack against a D-II school and play sloppy, but you want to see focus and effort more than anything else in exhibitions like this one.

38-37 NKU 3 minutes into the 2nd half.

27 of NKU's 41 points are from 3point range they are shooting 60% from beyond the arc. This worries me.

Solid defense inside the arc though, they've gone 5-12.

Whoever wanted to know about Rashad, currently in the 3rd Q he has 7 points, 3-3 from the field and 2 rebounds. Solid game for him.

NorrisHopper30

Bishop 10 points 4 rebounds.

Deonta looks a lot better than last year, even though he's not shooting very well today he still has 7 assists and 4 steals!

Adam H has 15 points

McClain 10 points(5-9 fg) 5 rebounds 1 block

John Williamson 9 points 7 rebounds

The team is shooting 55% from the field even with the terrible 3-14 from 3pt range

70-68 UC with less than a minute.

UC wins 76 - 71.

Mediocre FT shooting until the end for the cats

With a minute left they were 9-21 from the line and they ended up at 15-27.

Wasn't able to use the tix tonight (candy and beer duty), but in looking at the box score, great to see balance (even thought this game proves/demonstrates nothing in relation to how this season should play out)there is really only one thing that stands out to me as unexpected. Alvin Mitchell, the one who by most acccounts had been billed as the most "Big East Ready" recruit, got the least minutes (except for Miller). Again, can't read too much in, but surprising.

maybe least minutes of those on the floor, but Davis and Belton never even got in the game.

I was at the game. Stands were pretty well empty of warm bodies. My guess no more than 2500 actually on hand. Belton never got in the game. Did I miss something? Is he Hurt?

Did Larry Davis? I am pretty sure he didnt get in. I was not impressed with Deonta's defense, it seemed like he went for all steals and didnt move his feet, like he was wanting to steal the ball or get easy fastbreak points.

Overall I was pleased with the big guys Adam H and McClain played well on offense, I was glad to see Biggie throw down some power dunks and not just lay it in. He even hit a 17 foot jumper! Dont get me wrong he is still raw, but I liked what I saw. On defense he was gaurding 6'4 guys and it is difficult for him to move his feet with them.

Also I think Rashad Bishop is going to contribute a lot, he is smooth. 6'6 can rebound the basketball and put up points. He seems to me to be the most polished player. Oh and I wouldnt get too concerned with the point NKU hit a lot of contested deep balls to keep them in the game. Warren, Gentry, Sikes didnt contribute at all.

Am I the only one that thinks that John Williamson is a left handed, less talented version of Eric Hicks, that is not a compliment. He is a hard worker but he cant play basketball. No touch, none. Also we will be the worst free throw shooting team in the country.

I like Williamson, but he's one of the few player out there that could brick a layup. You're right, touch............not so much.
I hope our 'veterans' contribute more than what they've shown, although one game against an easy opponent does not exactly provide trends.

He was just making an observation. If you are going to use sarcasm to say someone is not smart, you better first learn how to write.

Bp4thebest - I know you are new here. You might want to look over The Rules (http://forums.bearcatnews.com/showthread.php?t=111) of the board (sarcasm is not against the rules, but is mentioned) and if your writing skills improve, your comments will be taken more seriously. Welcome aboard.

Going by last night only it looks like this team is going to struggle, 9-21 overall, 2-16 in the Big East.

That would be unacceptable. I think UC will win 17 or 18 games.
