Smith, a 6-5 senior, said Saturday that he has solidified his plans. He will attend Maine Central Institute -- a prep school that has produced nine current or former NBA players -- and enroll at Cincinnati the following year.
....
"They watched me develop," Smith said. "Playing with Marquis and (Fort Wayne Bishop Luers standout) Deshaun Thomas got me a lot of exposure, and they came into the picture early in the school year and told me about the prep school situation."
Smith, who was also pursued heavily by IUPUI and Morehead State, said qualifying academically for college next year would have depended on his test scores. Cincinnati told him it didn't have any scholarships available this fall.
"They didn't have a scholarship available for me and asked if I'd be willing to take a year off and develop my game as a wing player," Smith said. "You can't beat the Big East (Conference), so I'm going to go up (to Maine) for a year and come back."
