Geez.... the what if game is devastating... Downey, Beasley, Mayo,Walker..... all players playing now that "could have beens"... we'd be talking national championship instead of loss to belmont.

I read an article recently where Mayo was quoted as saying that during his HS sophomore year that he wanted to go to USC, not UC. So, Mayo was certainly NOT a lock to come to UC. And Beasley loved Coach Huggins so much that he elected to stay at Kansas State instead of following him to WVU.

Very true! I see Huggins becoming a much better game coach/recruiter in our memories than he ever was in reality.

If Huggins was still here he would NOT have had Beasley and Mayo. Mayo wanted to go to USC, plain and simple. He may have had Walker, but thats it.

Wasn't Beasley tied at the hip to Dalonte Hill?

Wasn't Beasley tied at the hip to Dalonte Hill?

Yes, and guess what, had Huggins been at UC still, Hill would probably be at Charlotte. Some people fail to realize this. Oh, and there is the fact that Huggins had a year to recruit without any restrictions. He would not have had that at UC.

to bad we didn't have the chance to find out who's right...
I'd be curious on Mike's thoughts on this.....

also,... Mayo didn't "Always want to go to USC" they weren't even on his short list as late as after the huggins firing

"cincinnati, ohio: o.j have you started your college selection and what are your top choices
O.J. Mayo: I have about 9-10 choices. I like Florida A&M, Louisville, Texas, Georgia Tech, Connecticut, Kentucky, Syracuse, West Virginia, Cincinnati and North Carolina. (not in any order) "

OJ didn't want to go to USC from the start. The only reason he ended up going there was because their coach has NBA connections and NBA experience and OJ thought that could help him develop and learn about the NBA before he got there.

Who are you quoting? Nobody said he "always" wanted to go there. I never thought UC had a good chance of landing him.

The Mayo era at USC got off to a <cough> flying start. Mercer blew out the Trojans at USC.

Mayo had a very good game pts wise, but I imgaine - didn't see the game - that he held the ball more than you could imagine and his defense was weak. This is a team that did very well with team chemistry last year and I wonder how they will grow together as a team.

Sonny Vaccaro sent Mayo to USC. Anybody who thinks Tim Floyd has NBA credentials is nuts. Floyd was a TERRIBLE coach in the NBA.

So was Pitino, apparently hasn't affected him.

Mayo wanted to go to Los Angeles, simple as that.

Mayo wasn't even being recruited by USC as they didn't think they had a chance, but Mayo calle dthem and told him that he wanted to go there.

Pitino was a good coach at NY Knicks, poor coach at Boston Celtics.

But Pitino >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Tim Floyd as NBA coach.

Keep 'em coming. Always good for a chuckle.

Actually, I have. Have you? It is a pretty nice college town, not a great place, but pretty nice.

Here, case and point, per Mayo:

"I think USC is the best situation for me," Mayo said. "It's the perfect opportunity with coach (Tim) Floyd there. He coached in the NBA and knows what it takes to reach the league.

"Plus, Los Angeles is great city, unlike a small college town where all eyes would be on my every move. I just want to blend in and enjoy my time at school," he says.

This weekend, Mayo will take his official visit to USC.

He added, signing with the Trojans was "solely my decision, there wasn't anyone else influencing me."

Please read above. You are looking worse and worse after each post. You might as well give it up. What's next, OJ was lying?

Pitino almost single handedly ruined the Celtics organization. They are still worse off for what he did to that franchise.

Well then, I guess we'll never know. IMO, he wasn't ever coming to UC. Might have been on his list, but I doubt it would have been his first choice.

This was disputing Tom's baseless argument the OJ's decision to go to USC had nothing to do with Floyd and his NBA experience.

Which is why an earlier post of mine said, it's too bad we'll never know... nice to know you've come around...

Frankly I agree with Tom, tim floyd doesn't have that great of an NBA history... in addition if you really want to use that... then that puts a strong point for Huggins too... he had a few guys that made it to the next level, I think any player would be able to see that... including a Number 1 pick.

Also... "in your opinion he wasn't coming" I have some pretty good sources that say he was and was just waiting for the contract extension for Huggins. it wasn't just my opinion that I based that on. it was a few recruiting gurus nationally as well as some of the real guru's right here on Bearcatnews ... but I won't put them in the middle of this because if they wanted to be they would speak up right now. (along with Walker)

let's just leave it at that.

Mayo didn't go to USC because of Floyd, he went because his "boss" suggested it.... Vacarro... :)

Sorry, but Huggins has never coached in the NBA before. Floyd has. Read Mayo's quotes, that is all you need to know.

I love how everyone has "sources" to support their argument. Who are your sources? I bet you can't name them, can you?

Again, re-read the quotes. You couldn't be further from the truth.

Floyd destroyed the Bulls of the 1990's. I watched him do it. Pitino > Floyd as any kind of coach, even NBA.

Of course I've been there. Coaching friend got me tickets last year.

Nowhere for a guy like Mayo.

(In Tim Floyd's Own Words)

Chicago Bulls
On July 23, 1998, Floyd was hired head coach of the Chicago Bulls of the NBA. In his first season with the Bulls, the lockout season of 1998-1999, the team posted a record of 13-37. The next season, the Bulls had a 17-65 record. The team continued to regress, posting a 15-67 record in the 2000-2001 season. His fourth year as coach was marred by fights with players and management. Floyd resigned on December 24, 2001 after a 4-21 start.

In his four seasons with the Bulls, Floyd posted a record of 49-190. The team did not make the NBA Playoffs in any of those years. Known as Jerry Krause's boy by the Chicago media, an entertaining press conference had Floyd proclaim [I'm not] "Jerry's boy."[1]

New Orleans Hornets
As head coach of the New Orleans Hornets in 2003-2004, Floyd posted a 41-41 record, despite the mid-season loss of Hornets star Jamal Mashburn. The Hornets lost in the first round of the playoffs, taking the Miami Heat the full seven games. Ownership was dissatisfied and dismissed Floyd after just one season.

Floyd ended his NBA career with a 93-235 overall record, including the playoffs, admitting in interviews that, as an NBA coach, "I wasn't very good at it".[2]
