I think he will be the last one down the floor EVERY time.

He could still be all of the above though.

i hope all the hype is true, but unfortunately due to his track record that predates long before he came to UC, I'm going to believe it when i see it. the team needs him to be key piece for their personal success, and hopefully he really has found the spark.

Well lets hope its because our guards are streaking down the floor in Mick's up-tempo system lol

He has a great chance, I believe he's the best skilled bigman coming back....

There were times last year when he went streaking down the court and finished off with dunks. It appeared that he only did that though when he thought that he was going to get the ball. Hopefully, we see much more of that this year. One thing that I think will improve this year is getting him the ball. It is a little hard to keep your intensity up when you know that someone is just going to jack up a three on every possession.

So, why hustle if you know you're not going to get the ball....nice attitude!

I think you may be right. The other thing that should help Yancy immensely is that Cashmere should be 100% over his injury, and that much quicker off the dribble. I'm hoping these two combine for several drive-dish-dunk sequences a game.

It seemed one of the problems last year was that when entry passes were made to the post, our post players missed wide open shots.

While some have focused last year's offensive problems on LS and DV, it seems that as a player, at some point you have to ask, why am I going to put the ball in the post when we are going to miss the shot?

Hopefully, our post players will be able to finish plays this year. If they can't, I'm not sure the offense will run more efficiently.

That being said, 52% isn't horrible for a big man. Greg Monroe shot 54% but he had a lot more attempts than Gates.

Good point. Here are a couple others. Gates got slightly more attempts per minute than Monroe (11.9 v. 11.3; 297/25 v. 385/34). The problem was that Gates couldn't stay on the floor. When Gates wasn't on the floor who was getting those minutes Thomas 38%, Toyloy 53%, Wilks 50%, Biggie 46%. I see a problem for offensive efficiency. Also, none of our big men shoot FT well - around 50% or below.

Finally, my impression of our big men and this is just a memory is that I didn't see them consistently fight for position and get good position. Wilks, Biggie, and Thomas got moved around pretty well. Thomas, if memory serves correctly, spent a lot of time on the perimeter.

Thomas has said that he does not want to play with his back to the basket. As for Gates, I wish that he would just finish off with a dunk each time.

I appreciate his sentiments, but it seems to me - if we are going to be successful and have an efficient offense, we need him to play in the post. I don't know how a 6-11 player decides he isn't going to fully develop his game.

His comment reminds me of when Robert Whaley stated he did think of himself as a rebounder . . .

In his defense, Thomas stated this desire in his reasons for leaving OSU and coming here.

Thomas has said that he does not want to play with his back to the basket.

He did say that, but then last year he played quite a bit with his back to the basket and did pretty well.

Well this is where we need Yancy to be more of a bad *** dunk you very much the guy has good ball skills for a college big man...and he likes the layup too much...so if he would try and dunk almost all his layups thats going to be some fould shots mixed in. whats he a 60% shooter? I dont know but I figured he'd get 4 more ppg from the line....I'd take that....OH i cant wait this weekend has me missing UC basketball

Well, he has the talent to do it. I just don't know if he has the desire.

At the NIT game last season we sat about 5 rows behind the UC bench. Sitting closer to the team ( my regular seats are in the upper deck), the one thing I watched a lot was how Gates acted. Honestly, I was shocked at how he seemed to be laughing, staring into space, and just not paying much attention to what was going on.

I think Gates could the dominant player in the BE, and one of the best in the country, if he just wanted to be. I'm just not convinced he has the desire to play at that level. I hope I'm wrong.
