Watched Yancy Gates play Saturday in a pre-season event. He looked good. Attacked the basket, hit some treys, blocked a few shots and showed how physical he can be.

He is an excellent physical specimen for basketball and that why coaches chased him hard. His is about the same size and build as Danny Fortson, Dontonio Wingfield or Luke Walton in measurements, however, he is likely more athletic than any of these three. He has a nice mid range, pullup jumper and can hit the trey, but I don't see him averaging more than one trey attempt per game in college. Plenty of dunks, of course. He plays the middle for Withrow, but will develop into a PF/SF in college. One knock on Gates Saturday is that he was the last one down court on defense more often than he should be.

I was very pleased with his talent and effort on Saturday.

Good scouting report. I'd guess/hope he starts for UC next season.

Fat chance. Biggie will start at Center. Williams will start at PF (if healthy). Mitchell, Bishop, or Wilks will start at SF.

Gates is the level of talent needed to succeed in BEast play. Hope he starts.

Glad to see he played hard. When I saw him play last year he played lazy.

Mike, I've seen him listed as big as 6'10, 265 and when I watched him play LaSalle at the end of the year last year, he looked to be a half head taller than McElroy who is listed at 6'7, this would put him around 6'10, would you agree he is that big?

Yes, Gates will eventually start. Not next year.

Gates is at least 6'9. I saw him against Moeller last year and he's a huge kid.

He may have grown, but since he was much taller than anyone else in the games I saw, I couldnt get a good comparison of his height to similarly sized players and he didnt walk past me.

But if he is 6-8 or 6-10, those two inches dont matter that much as Eric Hicks' career demonstrated.

I have always thought two inches mattered.

Yea, but just imagine if Hicks were two inches taller. He would have been even more of a beast.

If Hicks were two inches taller, he would be playing in the NBA right now.

Getting back to Yancy, are there any high school basketball fans that think Withrow might be able to win state? I am a believer that Moeller is the team to beat again but I think Yancy could take control and win it all. I think I am going to follow Withrow and Yancy this year and I am going to try to get out to 5 or 6 games... Anyone else going to follow Withrow

Yancy looks like a complete MONSTER.. what a weapon to be able to bring off the bench next year, a la Maxiell his frosh yr...

I also LOVE the comments Mick gave about Cash Wright.. "great shooter" to go with all that speed and quickness

Withrow will compete again this year, but I think they will fall short again because of chemistry.

I see Moeller, St Eds, St X, Withrow, Middletown, Warren G Harding up near the top this year. Of course i'll homer and say Moe is gonna win it all

I have been going to high school basketball/football since I graduated from Woodward in 88, I went to several Withrow games last year and will do the same this year all. Withrow added a few transfers that should make them even better

Here are 2 events you should definitely checkout

The Scholastic and Flyin' events are always well run. I have attended some occasional Scholastic events and have been at the last three Flyin events.

Scholastic at the US Bank Arena -
11:00 Covington Catholic vs. Lexington Catholic (two of the better programs in the state)
12:30 St. X. vs. Winton Woods (Allen Payne)
2:15 Ryle vs. Moeller (defending D1 State Champs)
4:00 Grady Vs. La Salle (Bearcat commit Danny McElroy)
5:45 Withrow vs. American Christian (Bearcat commit Yancy Gates and AC's super quick Tyreke Evans who will be in NBA someday)
7:30 Chillicothe vs. North College Hill (NCH: 3X defending D3 state champs. This will be a battle of good guards)
9:00 Taft vs. Dayton Dunbar (Dayton commit Josh Benson is fun to watch)

Dont have time to detail the Flyin event, but -
- Former Bearcat Rodney Crawford coaches Harmony and he had 7 Div 1 players last season.
- Last year, Our Saviour New American had three seven footers.
- Genesis, Findlay and Westbury always have good teams.

I agree, Raj, these are always good events and I will be there for each.
