Default Next AD?

Okay, so who's next? I hope they do a broad search and are open to whoever, coast to coast. I don't suppose there are any true internal candidates but I don't know. Names? How about the guy from Tulsa - Bubba Cunningham? Also I thought there was a great AD who was at Southern Illinois but now is at Colorado I think. Paul Kowalcik. Just throwing out names.

It needs to be a Cincinnati person who is also hopefully a UC grad, who has potentially retired from his main line of work and is looking to give back.

If there is a major problem with marketing/fund raising during the last administration, it would be that it was too inside the box for a very outside the box situation.

Id rather the person have no athletic department experience but know the City and know how to work it. They hire search firms for every job nowadays anyway. Did MT really need a search firm to find Mick Cronin? If he did, then a new guy would too.

I want the next AD to have never visited Cincinnati, we have too much "Cincinnati at all costs ties" to begin with. I think it would put the future of the athletic department in a cul-de-sac. I want somebody who is cosmopolitan, and knows how to get money from people from anywhere. Fans will follow winning programs at UC because of the name on the jersey, not because whoever runs the show is from Cincinnati. Case in point, look at the basketball team. Cronin is probably more Cincinnati than anybody, and it took until he had a good season for fans to jump on board.

Pretty sure Cronin is the only UC/Cincinnati guy in the athletic department. Just saying.

Wow - I was hoping there would be a little more buzz about this.

I read that as either bad (because we don't think we'll get a good candidate) or good (because we're playing it all very close to the vest).

And, giving the timing of things, could this have happened at a worse time? I suppose it's never good with sports taking place year round, but right before football season - yech!

With another round of potential conference shuffling forthcoming, I doubt any major AD news will be coming our way. How could a AD sign up when he is not sure what conference we will be in...

Not to derail the thread, but why would we suddenly be cut and or cut and run from the BE? I assumed our position was fairly stable if not advantageous.

I think you would be wrong.

If some conference raids the BE, I think that our lack of funding would be a major obstacle in our being chosen to join one of the new super conferences.

Unless the BE is pro-active and gets some other teams before we are raided, then I could very easily see UC left behind in one of the non-AQ conferences.

Default Search for new AD

This is from Koch on Oct 15th. Does it make anyone else nervous?

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/2...re-them-needed

AD SEARCH CONTINUES: Williams is not using a search committee to find the replacement for athletic director Mike Thomas.

“There is no formal search committee,” said associate athletic director Doug Mosely. “The university has not opened the position nor posted an announcement. There is no way to apply for this position.

“The president continues to assess the athletic director position. He has a number of people who are advising him on athletics. He has met with some of these individuals and conferred with others in indifferent environments.”

Thomas resigned as UC’s athletic director on Aug. 10 to accept the same position at Illinois. Since then, deputy AD Bob Arkeilpane has served as UC’s interim athletic director.

This is it in a nut shell, Ark is Williams only canidate and the only person he talked to. Ark turned down the position because he feels the Athletic dept. is not finianclly fit for the Big East and that UC was way over its head when the excepted Big East invite. He will stay on as long as Williams will have him.

One of the persons advicing Williams is Mr. Meyers and he may interveiw in the future but nothing firm. He and Coach Jones are good friends and any canidate must be able to jive with Butch.

Nick Carparelli, the Big East senior associate commissioner in charge of football and marketing, said Wednesday he is no longer a candidate for the athletic director job at UC.

"Cincinnati had asked me to consider their athletic director position," Carparelli said. "I'm flattered they would consider me for this position."

Given all that's happening with conference realignment, Carparelli said, he has informed UC president Greg Williams that it would be inappropriate for him to leave the Big East at this time.

If the "football schools" had taken the bull by the horns and left last year, added 4 new football members, and moved on, they would be in great shape today. Instead look at where we are.

I'm not sure that getting a person from a school that stresses basketball is the best thing for our football program. Working in Northern Kentucky, I see that all are rabid fans of Kentucky basketball but no one cares about football or could even tell you how their team is doing.

If the choice is/was amongst the 4 names we have heard, Babcock appears to be head and shoulders above the other 3, at least for what we need/want.
