Tony Pike gets tryout with Bengals

Quote:
Former UC quarterback Tony Pike has landed a tryout for the Bengals next week.

Also getting a tryout is former UC corner Reuben Haley, who also played locally at Mount Healthy.

Tony has very comparable playing style to Flacco and his height and scrambling ability reminds many of Big Ben.

Sounds like a premier practice squad player.

Pike Grateful For Bengals Opportunity - dan Hoard

Quote:
“I’ve been back in Cincinnati rehabbing for a long time and the Bengals reached out to my agent with some questions about my health and when I was going to get back to 100%,” said Pike. “After that, it was just a matter of me getting healthy and the timing being right for the mini-camp. It’s an unbelievable opportunity. Growing up in Cincinnati and being a Bengals fan, it’s been a life-long dream to be a Bengal. For them to give me that opportunity to come into mini-camp and see what I can do means a lot.”

Tony has also put on some weight (235# now) which should help his durability.

Add that he will be there with Binns and Hazleton and that should help his comfort.

(Tony Pike) sounded upbeat after Friday's first practice, what he called his biggest workload since last year's training camp in Carolina. He was more anxious to see how he threw in Friday's second session to see if the elbow could bounce back. With no ice or harness between practices, he looked relaxed.

"It's holding up well," he said. "The strength is almost 100 percent back. The accuracy feels fine. With the rehab process and the surgery you occasionally get some numbness and it might affect your spiral. But that's healing as I go. You're getting your feel back day by day."

Pike is getting five practices this weekend to convince the Bengals he's worth signing to a deal and taking to training camp. They're set with Andy Dalton as the starter and Bruce Gradkowski as the backup, so Pike would be looking at the No. 3 spot.

He knows he won't get any favor for being a hometown player.

"In a camp like this, I come in with the mind-set that I have to prove myself," Pike said. "Obviously, what you did in college is what you did in college. I've had a year off from football, and it's just about getting back out there. Unfortunately, it's only 2 1/2 days to bring it all back together."
