Measurements, per DraftExpress
http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Yancy-Gates-1281/ 6'8 1/4", 287 lbs. (listed at 260 this year on GoBearcats) Wingspan: 7'3 "The heaviest player at the camp by far is Yancy Gates at 287 pounds. His 7-3 wingspan is intriguing, but he'll obviously need to get in much better shape than he was here." |

I mean seriously, Sullinger was listed at 265lbs and Gates has twice the frame that Sullinger has. Yancy is built like a linebacker from the waist up and it's not unusual to find an NFL linebacker weighing in at 240lbs and only measuring 6'0" or 6'1". For Yancy to have that kind of bulk but also be 6'9" tall means that 260lbs is a pipedream. His optimal playing weight is probably somewhere around 275lbs (after all, Gates isn't built like Anthony Davis or a Ethiopian refugee) meaning he'd have to lose just over 4% of his body weight to reach the target and that should not be too difficult.

"Yancy Gates is not playing in the PIT semi-final game due to an injured right shoulder."
Also, nice write-up here - will let the "Yancey" (mis)spelling and the 245-lb. description slide. http://www.dailypress.com/sports/dp-...,2731667.story |

Yancy works out with New York Knicks (saw on another thread already, but here is an article)
http://www.zagsblog.com/2012/05/29/k...s-spoon-brown/ Despite the knocks on him, the 6-foot-9 Gates believes he could contribute to the Knicks’ frontcourt. “Looking at the Knicks roster, I think I can come in, kind of be that guy that…can get a lot of garbage buckets, maybe guard different people,” Gates said. “Just try to do different things. Some things don’t show up on the stat sheet, but it’s a big part of winning.” Gates said he’s currently weighing 270 and wants to get down to 260 or 265, but believes he could play some center in addition to power forward. “Oh yeah, definitely, I think I could because of my strength,” said Gates, who is projected as the No. 72 best prospect in the NBA Draft by DraftExpress.com. “I’m big enough to be able to guard and hold a center off.” Gates averaged 12.2 points and 8.9 rebounds last season at Cincinnati, but comes from a defensive-oriented program at Cincinnati, which is something the Knicks need under coach Mike Woodson. “That’s how we played at Cincinnati,” he said. “We relied on playing defense and usually it proved to help us win. So playing for a defensive-minded coach would find right into what I’m used to.” #Yansanity |

Does anybody know if the prospect number includes European players? If not, there is no chance that Yancy gets drafted at the #72 prospect.

Never know. The Knicks have a knack for drafting peculiar players. see: Renaldo Balkman and Frederic Weis.

Cincinnati big man Yancy Gates worked out for the Warriors on Saturday. He seemed genuinely sorry about the Xavier brawl. "I learned a lot. I think the brawl helped me grow up a little bit. It taught me how to deal with different situation and adversity. The time I wasn’t playing gave me time to sit and reflect on the opportunity I had been blessed with." |

Thoughts:
1. The NBA is a private business that can set it's own rules, and they did. I believe they are wrong, but legally defined adult or not is not of consequence here. 2. Baseball has long had minor leagues before college athletics took off (financially I mean). A player can sign out of high school or go to college. I he chooses college it's 3 years. 3. I agree that people should be able to make a living if they can, anyway they qualify. 4. It's getting more difficult to call college athletes true amateurs. 5. Hard to compare MLB, NBA and NFL and come to any conclusion about which method of drafting (age requirements) is best.

Gates, a 6-foot-9, 260-pound forward, said he has worked out for six NBA teams – the San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Golden State Warriors, Portland Trail Blazers and Sacramento Kings. He has two more workouts scheduled – one with the Detroit Pistons and a second workout with the Spurs. ... UC coach Mick Cronin said recently he believes Gates will be drafted in the second round based on the number of phone calls he has received from NBA scouts. If Gates is chosen, it will probably be late in the second round. He is not listed in the two-round mock draft by either NBADraft.net or DraftExpress.com, which ranks him No. 23 among last year’s college senior class and No. 71 among 2012 draft prospects. |

Not drafted. Maybe he'll find something in FA?

Some quality players didn't get picked (WVU's Kevin Jones chief among them) so while it's gotta be disappointing for Yancy he's in a similar boat as a lot of guys. With the new salary cap rules, a free agent contributor can be worth their weight in gold. Hopefully he gets a summer league invite and parlays it into a camp invite and goes from there.

by the time you get down to the last ten picks, especially the last 5-6, it's nice to be drafted, but really it may be better for him that he wasn't, it doesn't limit him to just one team, and those teams picking late are usually the better teams who may not even have a spot for him anyway. Now he can look more at teams who need help at his position. Plus it may put that chip on his shoulder to make him work harder.

I loathe the rule that allows teams to draft foreign players and essentially lock them in the closet for a couple years until they are able to come to the States. Takes away opportunities for more ready players that could help a roster.
Yancy will most likely get a shot somewhere in the summer leagues. Hopefully he can find a place to stick. Teams like the Knicks, Warriors and Heat could use some more muscle in their frontcourts so you never know. |

Having watch all 3 of them quite a bit, there is no way i pick kris joseph or robbie hummel over kevin jones. You can argue jones is more of a pf than sf, but he does a lot more things well, particularly rebound in space, than the other two. That said, they may be throwaway picks anyway at 2, but jones has to be perplexed. he'll make an nba roster i predict.

Yancy picked up by the Pistons. If they keep him on the roster they will be huge in the middle. Monroe, Maxiell, Drummond, Villanueva, and Gates. I don't know if there is a team in the NBA that can match up with that much size down low.
