Default James White signs with Knicks

The Knicks have agreed to terms with shooting guard James White, who has played the last two seasons in the Italian League, according to a source.
The 6-7 White was teammates with former Knicks player David Lee at the University of Florida before transferring to Cincinnati. Known as a terrific athlete, White, 29, played six games with the Spurs in 2006-07 and four games for the Rockets in 2008-09. A European Web site first reported the Knicks' agreement.

In high school, White was runner-up to Lee in the 2002 McDonald’s High School Slam-Dunk contest and earned the nickname “Flight 75." One report in 2006 described White as the best athlete in the draft. He was picked in the second round by the Portland Trail Blazers. The last two seasons in Italy, White averaged 20 points and 17 points, respectively.

Knicks GM Glen Grunwald relies heavily on European scout Kevin Wilson, and the Knicks have talked about thinking “out of the box’’ this summer as they explore adding European players to their roster. Spanish League PG Pablo Prigioni visited the team three weeks ago, and he is on their radar.

The Knicks have probably lost starting SG Landry Fields to the Raptors, after Fields agreed to a 3-year, $19M offer sheet yesterday. The Knicks aren’t likely to match that.

Knicks officially sign James White
Quote:
The Knicks made their signing of swingman James White official on Wednesday, but did not announce any terms (multiple reports say the deal is for one year).

What White brings to the Knicks is defense, energy and athleticism. He can play both shooting guard and small forward, which is helpful to a team that's about to lose Landry Fields to the Toronto Raptors; and he's a disciplined shooter. White isn't going to wow anyone from beyond the arc, but he's capable of hitting open shots and that's all the Knicks should need from him.

Glad to hear White's doing well.

Who cares. It is national attention. UC's basketball program needs attention in just about any way it can get it.
