Default 2013 Recruiting Class (So Far)

Last year was considered by most to be the best recruiting class by UC ever. Just about every kid was a consensus three star recruit.

This year so far, we seem to have gotten commitments from as many two star or lower recruits as three star recruits.

Anybody got a take on what's going on (and I fully appreciate that in the final analysis the quality of any recruit is based on productivity at the college level not on the number of stars coming out of high school)?

Is recruiting being hurt by the future lack of an "automatic qualifying" status for the Big East? Is Coombs' loss being felt?

Isnt in pretty early in the process to worry about that? Just asking the question as isnt it until February until they actually commit.

There's still plenty of time for kids to be evaluated and get a bump in the ratings. For instance, Meeks and Wiesman are rated two stars on Scout. Meeks has offers from Florida State, Michigan State, NC State, USF, Pitt and Arizona St. amongst others. Wiesman has offers from Tennessee, BC, Kansas, West Virginia, etc. Hardly the offer lists of two star players. Guys like Flick, Cox, MTB and Lanton all received offers after camping at UC so the staff must have felt like those guys are as good or better than some of the other prospects they'd already offered after getting a chance to see them in person and put them through a workout. We'll see how the ratings evolve over the course of these kids' senior seasons.

I never look at the star ratings since the star ratings are usually done by "experts" instead of coaches. My main focus is on what schools/conferences are offering a player. If they hold at least two offers from either an SEC/Big Ten/Big 12/PAC 12/ACC school then to me they are top BEast caliber potential players.

I can also look at players like I Pead who were snubbed by his hometown Buckeyes or Mardy Gilyard but who came to Cincinnati and became legends in Clifton with their play on the field. Sometimes the intangibles that scouts don't look at when assigning star ratings are truly the most important thing to look at when it comes to players which coaches are usually more adept at spotting and is why the "experts" are "experts" and not coaches.

Also the SPARQ rating is a much better indicator than the star rating as well if you want to look at a tool the "experts" use that actually does work.
