He is exactly what I expected, frankly. He posted pedestrian numbers at an NAIA school last year. Why would anyone expect him to play well in the BEast if he did not dominate NAIA players? He is not physical enough, he has hands of stone and his offensive skill set is undeveloped.

When we signed him, I kind of envisioned him as having the skill-set of someone who would play about 5 minutes per game this year for the Bearcats.

I was pleasantly surprised at how decent he looked early in the season (against the lesser competition). At that time, I wondered how his play would translate against better competition in the Big East games. That now is very apparent.

i think he will be better next year given his trip through the big east this year, and who know where we will be next year. he was the key guy in the win at pitt which right now is maybe out best win given it was on the road. doubt we win that game if not for his second half performance. they've struggle to get him the ball and honestly he doesn't always look like he wants it either.

With any skill at all, a guy who is 7'1" should get 10 pts and 10 rbs per game. David needs a post up move to be effective and threaten the opponents. Where is the coaching for big men on this team? He seems to be able to move pretty well, but needs some practice with back to the goal. That would take some pressure off the outside shooting.

I think we need to keep our expectations in check. Looking around the BEast, there are 5 active guys that are 7' or taller.

Steve Adams (Pitt, FR, 7'0", 7 pts & 6.2 rb)
Enosh Wolf (Unconn, JR, 7'1", 3.4 pts & 3.4 rb)
David Nyarsuk (UC, JR, 7'1", 2.9 pts & 2.7 rb)
Jordon Omogbehin (SFla, Fr, 7'3", 0.8 pts & 1.2 rb)
Bradley Hayes (GTown, Fr, 7'0", 0 pts & 0 rbd)

There are 22 guys 6'10" and higher. The top four:
Kadeem Bates (Prov, Jr, 6'10", 15.2 pts & 7.2 rb)
George Dieng (Lou, Jr, 6'11", 9.9 pts & 10 rb)
Monphtao Yaro (Vill, Sr, 6'10", 9.5 pts & 7.6 rb)
Steve Adams (Pitt, FR, 7'0", 7 pts & 6.2 rb)

Out of 22 guys close to 7' only two are close to double digit points and rebounds.

What he said - AND - even if you teach him a couple of inside moves (assuming he could execute them with any sort of proficiency) how are you going to get him the ball? He really has trouble holding on to any sort of pass that isn't a floater - and how many of those would we get away with against upper echelon competition?

If nothing else it brings me great joy watching him bound across the whole court to defend a fast break.

Just stating facts...

During UC's 20 wins:
  • Nyarsuk averages 13.6 minutes/game (11.4 minutes/each Big East game)
  • He has played double-digit minutes in 16 out of the 20 games
  • Minutes in each win: 24, 13, 12, 19, 23, 11, 10, 17, 16, 16, 10, 10, 19, 6, 18, 18, 2, 7, 4, 17

During UC's 10 losses:
  • Nyarsuk averages 9 minutes/game
  • He has played double-digit minutes in 4 out of the 10 losses
  • Minutes in each loss: 9, 6, 10, 7, 6, 13, 3, 13, 8, 15

I suppose it is debatable the degree in which Nyarsuk is a contributing facor in the wins, although the data suggests that UC might be a better team with him in the lineup vs him out of the lineup.

BTW Enosch Wolf has been kicked off of UConn's team for felony theft. He'll likely be deported back to Germany if the charges hold up.

The big man coach WAS George Jackson who left during the end of the season last year with medical issues. Darren Savino is coaching bigs and frankly it's not his forte'.

So we should expect less because others aren't producing either?

I like David and think he is learning how to play D1 basketball but learning a new language and customs... the kid walked on the court in a basketball game wearing his jersey backwards without knowing it. Give him a break.

I, for one, certainly have no knowledge which would cast any doubt whatsoever on whether David is a good guy, and working hard at everything. HOWEVER (!), that has absolutely no bearing on whether his basketball skills warrant extending him a scholarship offer at a high level division 1 program.
