Chris Obekpa, a 6-foot-9 Nigerian power forward at Our Savior New American on Long Island, hosted head coaches from UCLA, Providence and Cincinnati on Sunday for in-home visits. Ben Howland had Phil Mathews with him. Ed Cooley brought Andre LaFleur and Mick Cronin was accompanied by Darren Savino. ... “We spoke about possibly taking an unofficial to Providence,” Jaklitsch said. “We spoke to UCLA and Cincinnati about taking official visits out there once he gets his SAT and everything.” |

From what I've read, he sounds like a great kid. Interested in academics, works hard, and values defense. Another "raw talent" on offense, but something tells me he fits that prototypical Bearcat mode of tough defense, long athleticism, and high upside.
Also, it seems like nearly every BEast school is interested and/or has offered, including UConn, St. John's, Providence, Villanova, and Seton Hall. WVU has also expressed interest. Let's hope our pipeline from NYC continues...

Will wait until spring (April) to sign Obekpa, a native of Nigeria, is considering a slew of high-major programs, including UConn, Providence, Cincinnati, UCLA, St. John’s, Georgia Tech, Florida and Kentucky. Kentucky has yet to offer. Not sure how good this guy is and if UC is actively going after him/he's interested in UC. But I'd like to add another big guy since we are losing Gates and returning Mbodj and Gaines who are unproven at this point. |

Jeff Borzello (CBS) - Chris Obekpa, one of the best defensive players in the country, will decide in the late period, according to Our Savior New American (N.Y.) assistant coach Eric Jaklitsch. Connecticut, Cincinnati, St. John's, Florida, Kentucky, UCLA, Providence, Seton Hall, Georgia Tech and DePaul are all in the mix for the 6-foot-8 power forward.

That photo of him blocking the shot looks a lot like K-Mart blocking a shot. Don't want to compare him, but my first thought of that photo was of Kenyon.
Cross your fingers.

Our Savior New American power forward Chris Obekpa will visit Cincinnati when the Bearcats play Louisville on February 23rd. The 6-foot-8 shot blocker is considered one of the elite big men in the Class of 2012 and would immediately give Mick Cronin a piece to plug into the middle once Yancy Gates graduates after the season.

Mick Cronin is watching him right now per a number of twitter people (Scout, Rivals guys). So is Calhoun, Lavin.
Eric Bossi, Rivals: Cincinnati, St. John's and UConn among those watching. All head coaches plus an assistant. Jim Calhoun has two assistants with him. Last edited by GoBearcats31 : 01-15-2012 at 11:00 AM. |

it's important we do well in the big east tourney this year if we are to have any chance to land this kid out of the city. there was a buzz last year at the tourney after cronin got sanders and shaq thomas, and i suspect a strong showing at msg will be the biggest thing they can do a this point to have a chance to land him. however, it will be an uphill battle against uconn unless jc leaves.

you have to strike while the iron is hot, and now they are on the national presser i'm sure they are all over him. the buzz last year in nyc at the tourney was how cronin had made inroads into nyc with kpat, sanders and shaq thomas. hopefully that carries over with this kid. i really like the look of next year's squad with thomas becoming eligible and the outside shot we can land cobekpa as well.

Definately can fill Gates void. Gates don't block shots anyway. If UC lands Obekpa and Rubles with the guards we have coming back with Shaq Thomas Next Year will be bright. But hey I'm not done with this year yet. UC has something to prove in the BEAST.

Mick was on the scene again last night checking him out. Looking at his school list I'm biased but it looks lies he is UC'sto lose. UCONN could pose a threat but they are loaded down low already.
