Default UC Baseball wins the 'I-71 challenge' for third consecutive year

Not sure if anyone was able to catch this game in person or on the Big Ten Network. It was a nailbiter to the end but with the help of leftie Tom Gentile who K'd seven batters through four innings the baseball Bearcats were able to overcome two horrible, rally-ending out calls in the 6th inning to defeat the Buckeyes for the third consecutive season to lay claim to being champions of the Interstate 71 series (even the Big Ten Network announcers reviewed the calls and sided with the Bearcats).

PS: am I the only one who has wondered why the UC athletic department hasn't approached Pete Rose about a job as hitting coach? I think it goes without saying that having the Hit King as your hitting coach would instantly give the program an edge in recruiting. The question is how receptive would Pete be, but I don't see why he wouldn't want a seasonal occupation that doesn't require a year round commitment. This would be his way of thumbing his nose at the MLB by showing that he can still contribute to the sport of baseball and if he's successful would possibly place his name back in the national conversation on sports pages. And frankly, he's in Cincinnati frequently enough that I think this could work (e.g. he occassionally attends Reds games and Bearcat basketball games).

He would have to give up his autograph gig at Ceasar's in Las Vegas.

I have seen that in person. It is pretty pathetic. You have Pete sitting at a table with three or four handlers and nobody in the store. I am sure that I saw a down time or the store wouldn't pay Pete to be there but it was certainly not a money maker on the day I walked by.

Looks like Pete is locked up through 2016.

According to the following calendar he's on the schedule 5 or 6 days a week:

By the way, I am familiar with the exhibit you're referring to. My wife and I were in Vegas in 2009 and we went to see Pete at Field of Dreams in Caesers Forum mall. I have a first edition of his book My Prison Without Bars that I wanted to have him sign. To be frank, I didn't find it pathetic at all. Think about it, he gets to relive the glory days with fans for ~$75 a pop from noon to five a handful of days a week. Sure beats cleaning out the gutters or raking the leaves in the back yard like some former big leaguers from his era are doing. Remember Pete is from a time before the uber contracts we see today where players are set for life based simply on the signing bonus. I'm not saying he didn't squander much of his earnings. There's little doubt that he did. My point is the guy is getting paid to bask in the glory of his playing days. That sure beats what many of us do each day as we go to our white collar cubical farms or dress up in a bullchit suit and pound the pavement trying to drum up sales or grind metal parts in a fabrication shop or whatever else it is those of us on these forums do for a living.
