Cronin: "Octavius didn't adhere to the standard of conduct I expect from members of our team. I will work to help him find a fresh start at a new program because I do care very much for him as a person. He can benefit from being in a new environment. That's likely what will help him the best to learn and mature from this."

Ellis: "I regret the mistakes I made this year and I know I need to mature as a person. I want to thank my coaches and teammates for the opportunity I had at UC."

Babcock: "I believe coach Cronin has our program headed in the right direction. I appreciate his leaadership of our young men athletically, academically, and socially."

Can't blame Cronin and Whit for this, in fact I actually commend them.. But I'll be damned this kid has had a tough life. Watched his own mother get shot and now this. Really hoping he lands back on his feet somewhere.

Unfortunate turn of events. I too commend Whit and Mick for making this tough decision. This will hopefully make it clear to his teammates (incoming players, parents, coaches) what the expectations are (and consequences if failing them) for being a Bearcat.

With you on that man. It's tough to see a kid have a great opportunity to make the most of his life and then have to pull it away from him but they did the right thing here. Hope he makes the most of his fresh start and maybe see him in the NBA someday.

Man, I hate what this kid has gone through in his life. Really feel bad for him and I hope his basketball talent can help him overcome what he's been through. I really didn't want Cronin to let him go, but man did Cronin knock it out of the park with his statement here. His job does not require him to empathize with Ellis, in fact it discourages it since he has the reputation of the University to uphold. But clearly Mick understands the difficulty of what Ellis has gone through. Maybe Ellis will end up at Murray?

I could see that being a good fit for him. No big city pressures or tempations to deal with.

I wish Ellis the best of luck going forward.

Now, does this open his scholly for this year I'm assuming? So there are essentially 2 open to fill, barring Obekpa's decision?

Yes it opens it up. I expect an offer to Montrezl Harrell in the event Obekpa doesn't come here. If Obekpa does come here Harrell most likely signs somewhere else and Mick either uses it on a JUCO or saves it for the future. Not sure when it officially opens up though since they are letting Ellis finish out the quarter academically.

Unfortunately for Mr. Ellis this appears to be the only decision that was available to the program. Anything less fosters a culture that incidents such as the most recent one in the national media are to be tolerated.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...l?xid=si_ncaab

I am pleased to hear that Coach Cronin is not kicking Mr. Ellis out on the street and that Mick will act in a guiding role to help Octavius find a new home for his talents. This is further evidence that Mick practices what he preaches much like when he stated all last year he was proud of how his team developed as people not just as athletes. That is the sort of culture that will go a long way toward building a solid program where Mick will get high quality, four-year contributors not these one-and-done flashes in the pan.

Really? ESPN is stating directly that it is because of the bar incident...or are you referring to another suspension that hasn't been announced yet? (please tell me no!!)

OK You got me. This was accidental. I was afraid I was saying too much. References to the "tease" have been deleted and I will take a self imposed break from posting. If you are not satisfied with this and want more info, PM me here or DM me on Twitter @LobotC2DFW

I am aware that I've done this before. In this instance I was trying to protect an individual's privacy. If you choose to ask for more info, it will be on the agreement that it does not get reposted. Sorry and thanks.

I will start by saying that I have no knowledge of the incident nor do I have any insider view of what may have been discussed between Mick and the AD.

I do wonder though if this dismissal had anything to do with the fact that the Brawl with X attracted such national attention. If it had not happened, would Ellis now be "on probation" instead of out the door. I'm guessing they (at ucs athletic dept) are very concerned about the media smearing them, and have to appear to be running a very tight ship, so to speak.

Also, I wonder if Ellis looked to be a higher caliber player, or if more scholarships were open, if he would be given another opportunity. If it were SK, I'm guessing the evaluation of what to do may have been different. I hope they wouldn't overblow something to open up a scholarship. Not suggesting that they did, but crappier things happen in college sports (SEC football teams are notorious for getting kids who arent contributing enough off scholarship to open up spots.

Maybe he simply deserved to be removed for what happened at the nightclub, plain and simple. If anyone knows exactly what happened and is willing to pm me to share, I'd owe you one (of course, I never actually have any inside information so you'll not likely get paid back).

Trinity Valley Community College in Texas. Cronin has some ties there and Octavius played with another player on their team in HS.

Good find. That's where Nicky V began his career (and Shawn Kemp). Who is this Carl Porter from Cincinnati on the roster?

Looks like he is a guy from Withrow who was originally going to go to St Bonaventure. 6-5 wing player
