Default Cincinnati ranked #7 market by Nielson

Nielsen ranks Cincinnati 7th among ESPN's "metered" markets for college basketball in 2011-12. # Bearcats.

*My question is how many total markets are tracked? If 100 or more this is pretty good.

That certainly seems plausible. Think about about it, Cincinnati has UC, XU, and UD. If you dial the lens out a bit you could also include Indiana, Louisville, and Kentucky.

But it's also this abundance of choices for basketball fans that is what has plagued UC for years vis-a-vis the so-called big programs that dominate their markets. As an example take a look at schools like USC and Ohio State which have little competition in large metro areas. Los Angeles hasn't had a pro football team in years and Ohio State hasn't had professional anything until the Blue Jackets arrived in 2000. UC competes not only with the surrounding collegiate athletic programs but also with the Reds and Bengals for sporting event dollars. Ergo, while Cincinnati may be a top college basketball market that doesn't necessarilly all flow through to UC's bottom line.

We compete with many entertainment dollars, and are turning corner to begin huge basketball domination. Reds and Bengals doing well doesn't hurt too bad. We are not competing for same fans as X.

The bottom line on UC basketball is a fan base that only wants to attend when they can personally pick coach and call plays.
