@Dave Telep: Troy Caupain is now a Cincinnati Bearcat per his travel team coach.

@Fox19Joe: Just spoke to Troy Caupain's AAU coach. Troy committed to UC today. Ty White says his last name is pronounced cuh-Pain.

@Fox19Joe: Caupain's AAU coach says Troy "thirves on causing havoc in the lane". Said playing right away at UC was big reason he chose Bearcarts.

@Fox19Joe: One more from Ty White on Troy Caupain: "He blossomed into a phenomenal player the past 4 years". Said he's a "long 6'3".

@CHBrendel: Caupain has been a primary target for UC since late Jan. and with Cash Wright entering SR year need at PG was high. Very nice get #Bearcats

Sounds like a solid replacement for Cash.
Keep 'em coming.

Koch blog post
http://cincinnati.com/blogs/uc/2012/...commits-to-uc/

UC received a verbal commitment today for the recruiting Class of 2013 from Troy Caupain, a 6-3, 180-pound combo guard from Cosby High School in Midlothian, Va.

Caupain, who also had offers from Virginia Tech, Missouri and Virginia, averaged 25 points last year as a junior and set a school record for rebounds, averaging about 12 per game.

“He can get to the rim against anybody,” said Cosby coach Ron Carr. “He can really go past people. He picked a system that’s going to fit his talent. I think he’ll be outstanding in that system where people are trapping and running and playing uptempo.”

Carr said Caupain, a Rivals 3-star recruit, had one game last season where Caupain scored 48 points.

“He’s a very aggressive player, a very athletic kid,” Carr said.

Getting a chance to play in the Big East was a big factor in his Caupain’s decision to attend UC. He remembers going to the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden as a kid with his dad and telling his dad he wanted to be down on the floor playing.

“That’s always been my dream,” Caupain said. “I’m just trying to chase my dream.”
Caupain said he chose UC because of his relationships with associate head coach Larry Davis, who recruited him, and with UC head coach Mick Cronin.

“Also they have a great education,” he said. “When I get out of college, if I don’t end up playing basketball to make money, I can get a good degree.”

Excellent Pickup. From the videos available looks really long for a kid that is 6'-3". Hopefully he grows a little more before he gets here to fit his arm length. Battles on the boards. Doesn't give up on plays, had one where he missed a three ran back stole the ball passed it to a teammate going back, got the ball back and slammed it home. Nice dribbling skills, utilizes a great spin to layup move. Great at penetration from what I can tell. Will get in a player's face on defense. Liking this kid already.

This is strictly a hunch but I don't think this takes us out of the race for Corban Collins. Collins a PG and Caupain a Combo although UC recruited him as a PG. I think we try and get both for depth.

Good note - I still think the second is best used on a big or a swing.

But Caupain is a 2013 and Collins is a 2012. At least I think so.

Why does this takes us out of the race for Collins? We have 2 scholarships left for this year (Gates, Dixon, Ellis, subtracting the one to Rubles), plus 2 more open for next year (Mbodj, Parker, Cash, while subtracting the one going to Caupain). Couldn't we still go for Collins this year, try to get Morris during his visit, and save the other 2 for bigs (whether it be Obekpa or for next year)?

It doesn't take us out of the race in my mind. However sources are saying that we are no longer interested in Collins now that Caupain is on board or that Collins is no longer interested in us. Who knows for sure.

Personally , my opinion is get them both but doesn't appear that's the plan right now.

I am hearing 2 guards, a wing and 2 bigs is the plan right now with 5 total open spots between this class and the '13 class. I too have heard that Collins is no longer in the running with this commitment.

That's interesting. If the staff is going by the plan that Kindog said with 2 guards, you think it's because they would rather have Morris over Collins and feel they're in a good position with him?

How does collins have intangibles scored that high but ranked so low. Outstanding or good in everything but not ranked though.

I was thinking the same thing...maybe if Duke, UK, or whoever was recruiting him he would be a 4 or 5 star.

I think it's because he moved up at the last minutes from a 2013 recruit to a 2012 recruit more than anything.

I think there is a better chance of Kevin Johnson being that other guard, instead of Morris.

I guess. Theres top ten reruits in America that don't have one "outstanding" in their rivals write up let alone 2, and he is a 2 star.
