Default Pat Cummings

Pat Cummings died yesterday at age 55. What a tragedy. He was a friend of mine & I was his biggest fan. He was our best player of the 70's(in my opinion) & loved watching him make that hook shot. I made the mistake one
time by saying they don't play defense in the NBA. Holly cow, you would have
thought I committed a mortal sin with that statement. He told me very bluntly that you don't make it in the NBA unless you play defense. I never
brought that up again.
He was a good man that took good care of his parents & helped his brothers
out on many occasions. He had a sponsor when he came to UC named Mr. Daly(I believe the spelling is correct). Mr. Daly was like a father to Pat when
he was at UC. After he moved back to Cincy after his playing days, he would
always take Mr. Daly to the home UC games. Pat took care of the people that
took care of him.
We lost a good man yesterday & he will be sorely missed. Pat, as my friend
& your biggest fan, may you Rest in Peace.

JD, it was Bill Daly;he and his wife Darlene were 2 of UC's biggest supporters. PC was a great guy. This is shocking to say the least.

Deepest Sympathy to his family, a life cut short. Hopefully the University will honor Pat in some way.

Wow, I'm shocked. Way to young to go. We've lost some great Bearcats recently with Greg Cook, Phil Wheeler, Jack Twyman and now Pat Cummings passing.

RIP Pat. I enjoyed watching you play for the Bearcats in the mid-late 70's.

RIP Pat. This is the second recent death of a great basketball player in UC's rich history of men's basketball.

Barely a blirb in the bird cage liner. Pretty sad when I see the headline on MSN, then have to come to bearcatnews.com to find the story because I couldn't find it on the Enquirer site. Are all the Enquirer reporters on vacation? The Enquirer seems to keep fading away.

Sad to hear about Cummings. Another great Bearcat gone.

Cummings, 55, was one of the best basketball players to come out of Greater Johnstown High School and was a junior on a 25-1 team in 1972-73 that is considered perhaps the best in the program’s storied history.

He played for five NBA teams, including his time on the inaugural Miami Heat squad and in the big-city spotlight with the New York Knicks in the mid-1980s.

He averaged 9.6 points and 5.6 rebounds in 683 NBA games.

As a kid, I grew up a Knicks fan, and my favorite Knick of the early-Patrick Ewing era was Pat Cummings. Before I even knew much about basketball, as I was just getting into the sport, I knew I liked Pat, and I loved watching him Ewing lead the Knicks through some decidedly mediocre years. Never a fan-favorite in NY, I always appreciated Cummings for his tough, self-less play, and he was a good shooter. I was real upset when Pat Cummings left the Knicks for the new Miami Heat team, in what was sort of an early version of the modern-day free agent mega-contract (I think he got a total of $10 mil).
Fast forward to my college years, as a UC student. I became a staff writer on the News Record, and then eventually was Sports Editor. The year I became Sports Editor, The Shoe (as it will still always be referred to in my mind), underwent a bit of cosmetic touch-up, which included listing the names of all of UC's All-Americans throughout the years, up over the west-end student section. One of the names up there was Pat Cummings'
Pat Cummings!?!? My favorite Knick went to UC? The fella next to me told that not only did Pat Cummings go to UC, but that he was sitting just five rows behind me, in the lower level of the arena. He went to every game with his father. I introduced myself and he and I had a mild relationship throughout my time at UC. When my father, who was and still is a big Knicks fan (and who remembered Pat Cummings in college) would come to visit me at UC, we'd both go down to Pat Cummings' seats and chat with him about basketball.
For me, it was a big thrill to really have had even a small personal acquaintanceship with a boyhood favorite of mine. Corny as it sounds, it was kind of a dream come true. Funny and sad at the same, is that when I first met Pat Cummings he must have been no older than 41 years old. I am now 35 and have friends who are the same age that Pat Cummings was back then, some are even older. Cummings seemed like such an adult to me, nothing like these middle-aged babies (and I say that lovingly, of course) who I fraternize with.
Great man, Pat Cummings. A real favorite of mine. So, that's my own personal Pat Cummings story.
Rest in Peace.
