The QB will be the make it or break it position for the Cats this year. Butch originally said that the position is wide open. Last week, he fed some positive news on Legaux. But he has not firmly committed yet, has he? Brandon Kay seems to still be in the mix. Is Muchie Legaux the right guy for this year? Does he have the confidence of the coaching staff?

At tonight's practice, it was:
1. Munchie 2. Kay 3. Coyne Luallen ran the wildcat in a couple of goal line series. |

Why does CBS have the 'Cats (and Boise) trending downward???

Duh, before a game is played? Trends are based on (scalar) observables based on my UC education....albeit under BK, the 'Cats have been able to handle QB injuries and graduation losses pretty well. Coach Jones' recruiting classes have been somewhat better than BK's (if you believe the recruiting services).
Also, it is not the loss of Collaros, Pead, Wolfe per se...it is the DIFFERENCE in production between them and their replacements that determines how the team will fare. Duh. |

That being said... I still find it curious that Butch hasn't come out and named a starter. |

Slightly off topic, but I recall thinking all of last season that Munchie was just too thin to be our QB and it scared me every time he scrambled...seemed fragile.
In my mind, Coney is a larger version of Munchie - when I was at Higher Ground, I was really surprised by how similar their builds are. In pads, the guys are near clones of one another. I'm not sure if Coney is smaller than I thought or if Munchie bulked up in the off season, but regardless, I didn't get the same feeling this year. Here's to hoping that Munchie claims the job and passes it on to a prepared prototype in Coney! |

Seems like Butch is waiting to see some level of consistency (both in preparation and on-the-field execution) from Munchie. If he sees what he wants to see, the job is his. I would imagine we'll know more once they resume practices at Nippert. |

How is that a "duh?" Three players don't make a team. Almost everyone else who contributed last year is back.

You can't replace NFL players and not lose something, but as you said, there are many other players who will be better this year and may, collectively, make up that difference. |

Munchie's low release drives me crazy. 6'4" QBs shouldn't be getting passes knocked down every game. Any chance he's fixed that?

Could also be a ploy to keep Pitt guessing too. Kay doesn't have the scrambling ability that Munchie has, but in terms of injury, Kay scares me. The guy has a cannon, but he's been injured every year he's been here. Honestly, if we can get the ball in the WR's and RB's hands, we should be good, we have a lot of play-makers. I hope everyone keeps dogging us - the chip keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Butch said exactly that to Koch:
Quote:
Sounds like we'll have a wealth of running backs: Winn, Poteat, Abernathy, Buckley. I wonder if he'll red shirt Buckley to save him for a year. |

i haven't seen him myself, but i know he was highly regarded but slightly undersized. i would be shocked if he's red shirted as i've heard he has looked as good as any of the backs. i think there is an internal and natural inclination when guys are frosh to not play it up to much, but from what i hear he can flat out run the ball. boy the young backs and rec'd they have in the pipeline cannot help but get you excited for the season to start. here's to hoping they all can hold onto the ball.

If UC has finally reached the stage where we can lose our starting qb, the captain of our defense, and 3 other guys to early NFL draft selections, without missing a beat I couldn't be more elated. I sure hope you are right - it would mean we are finally reaching the stage where no matter who graduates we simply roll on at a premium level. |

I think it's safe to assume that Butch saw the level of consistency he was hoping to see from Munchie.
Big opening game next week. Sure would be mice to get out ot the gate strong. I'll be there rooting on the home team! |
